Yea, when you bolt the trans to the engine there should be a small space between the mating surface on the converter attachment points and the flex plate. When there isn't is what you had happen and the converter hub eats the pump and makes a mess.
If the converter has studs they should wiggle in the flex plate holes. And if it has bolts you should be able to spin the converter with the trans bolted up.
Yep, that’s exactly how it felt the final time I installed it. Wish it woulda taken me three less tries to figure it out though!
