What did you do to / in your garage / shop today?

I’m going up to my youngest son’s place in Virginia Beach next month to help him pull his motor, transmission and transfer case out of his badly rusted ‘85 4Runner and put it into a different one. He doesn’t have completely level area to work in, so I made up some mini chocks out of some pieces of rubber I’ve had laying around for years. I figure they will work well with the transmission jack and engine hoist we’ll be using. I made two more that are not connected together just in case. I don’t even know where they came from and I’ve almost threw these things away several times over the years.

It's like a dollhouse size version of tire chokes, especially with the string addition. Cute. ;)

J/K! Looks like a great self-created tool that matches your use case. Good on you looking for a safety-add tool. (y)

Last week I went up to Virginia Beach to help my youngest strip his old rusty 4Runner. He’s taking his engine/transmission/transfer case and interior and putting them into a much cleaner 4Runner. He bought this thing while in high school in 2007 while I was stationed in Korea for a year. When I got back home, we spent a lot of time fixing little things and getting it running decent. It was pretty rusty back at that time but it had really gone down hill the last several years. It was kinda bitter sweet to take her apart but it was also fun to be able to help him. He checked the valves and put a new timing chain/gears/guides on and plans to put a few more new parts on this coming weekend. A new water pump was one item, but I can’t remember the rest.

Oh, we had to pull the 35’s off and sit the front axle on the shortest jack stands he had to get enough clearance to get the motor out. 🤣

He’s been working by himself now, but got the old one out and the newer one in and a few things put back on.

Love stuff like this. Fixing what you have vs just financing something new the second something breaks. Wish more people took this type of approach!

Installed a wood stove in my 560 sqft 10’ wall uninsulated work room at the shop. Pipping cost about 3 times more than the stove itself. This replaces my very loud torpedo heater.

super cool, my favorite heat source. Any thought to insulate it? if the walls are open you could probably do it in a day.

Are those 2x6 studs? Even better if so, can make your firewood go a long way. I have a wood stove in my house big enough to heat the whole thing but it burns a lot of wood to do it. I have heat pumps so I let them do most of it and just step in with the stove when it gets cold enough that they need some help to stay out of the inefficient electric furnace stage.
