What did you do to your TJ today?

Some topcoat on all this Savvy MUA and engine skid steel parts. Rustoleum Canyon Black Satin.

It all get buried underneath and I’m worried about top coat 🤷

I got rear-ended yesterday. The besttop bumper took it vey well but the tailgate got dented in by the spare wheel. I'll get the car measured this afternoon to see if there is any structural damage. the other car is a complete write of, bonnet, radiator, headlights, all crumbled together. hard to believe when I look at the jeep:

Got some cheap new shocks fitted today… ( cheap because it’s getting a lift next year so not worth spending money on expensive ones.)
Glad I didn’t have time to do it myself before I head out on the long road trip… apparently it was a real battle to get the front ones off.

I leave in 2 days so set up some stuff I’ll be taking with me. ( no I’m taking the green model A door 😂 )

Got my LJ back on the road this afternoon. New Alternator, belt, idler pulley and belt tensioner. Then took it for a test drive to the next town over and it ran great. This was after a run through the field behind the house.

I'd almost forgot this little project I started about a year ago that kept getting put on the back burner due to other more pressing concerns. I got another transfer case shift lever, cut the top bend off of it, welded on a straight section, then welded on an old M10 bolt with the head cut off so I could put a matching shift knob to the one I made last year for the transmission shifter (only a bit smaller). I like the old school T/C shifter sticking straight up instead of hiding in the side of the console. Plus it's easier to reach.

Dodged a bullet there.
Sounds like about half a dozen bullets.

Project Long Jeep Hard Roof Rehab continues...

Finished cleaning up the interior surface of the top as I had decided to forego actually painting it. Not that bad once she's all cleaned up.

Before flipping the top (with the help of a kind neighbor) in order to make additional repairs to the outside surface, I had to address one other cleanup item. Seems a previous owner stored the top outside, either on the ground or not far from it, when not installed on their Jeep. No matter where you live, you're likely to pick up some unwanted guests if you do this...and whether they ever knew or not, pick up squatters they did.

For the past year driving around with the top installed as purchased, I noticed a rather regular deposit of dead flora and detritus on the carpet just inside the tailgate as well as inside the wiring and wiper motor covers. I suspected it was bedding for field mice or the like who apparently turned the rear cavity of the top into a condo of sorts.

Not much for access but having the top inverted over the past month for repairs allowed most (if not all) the crap packed inside the top to dislodge and fall to the top surface (temporarily the bottom). I picked up a set of shop vac detailing attachments in order to get into the smallish access holes and suck everything out. Unfortunately the attachments didn't mate to my brand of shop vac, fortunately I've got a 3D printer and rectified the problem within an hour... :geek:

Spent a couple of quality hours at it, this is well less than half of the material I ended up removing...

As a side note, Rustoleum Painter's Touch Ivory Bisque Semi is almost a dead ringer for the factory inside color of the hardtop. I needed to coat the inside portion of the previous lower edge repair with something as it likely wouldn't see much but overspray, this did the trick...

The top has now been flipped and remainder of the damage repair has commenced. I also started working the forward lip of the top to discreetly repair minor edge chipping with glass resin only. No photos of this at the moment.

Still experimenting with recreating the top texture. Picked up another spray product to play with, more on this to follow shortly. Also took some time to try working out the shape of the foam seals for the outer corners at the windshield frame. One of mine was in pieces and the other wasn't far behind but I think the shape will work. I need to recreate these as I haven't seen them anywhere and they don't come in the hardtop seal kits.

Found this box really funny! I was a taught to not ask, asking is an invite to trouble 😂.

I sign painted that as its always something... I carry spare oil, rags, hand tools, brake fluid, zip ties etc...cuz you never know haha.

You probably cant see it but the sticker on the top says "Explosives /Ammunition for disposal' on it. I had this sticker showing when a guys approached me while I was filling up the Jeep with gas...he was happy to talk Jeep until he saw the box and slowly backed away haha

I replaced bad reverse light switch (they now function).

I have some LED aux reverse lights I want to mount/ wire. Do you guys think I’ll be good incase I move to a state with “yearly inspections”? I could probably unplug/ remove the light to pass inspection and just bolt/ plug em back in right??

A friend made the repairs he desired. Then sanded it smooth. Took it to a body shop and had them paint it with the SEM chip guard texture of his choice and then top coated it satin black. You would never have guessed it was not factory.

I'm trying to avoid sanding the entire top down smooth and also trying to avoid additional material and labor charges for the respray. I was going to shoot it myself, but out of consideration for the family living above the bank of garages in my building, I thought it might be better to have a shop spray it. My plan is to deliver the top ready for masking and final spray prep.

If you visit the SEM website you can read about the textures they offer. They even have a sheet that tells you exactly the tip and pressure to use to do it yourself. They do have a few textures that require a special gun. If I was going to do this I would buy a Harbour Freight spray gun and throw it away afterwards. All the info for the job is on their website.

As long as they are only powered by the reverse light circuit I don't see why they would cause you to fail any state inspection.

If you're worried about it either wire them in with a relay and toggle switch using the reverse light circuit as the switching wire.
Or you could just run an all weather fuse and pull the fuse when you don't want them to come on.

I’m in the communist state of New York and we have no problems passing inspection with auxiliary reverse lights. 🇺🇸
