I think I posted elsewhere in the forum that I was thinking of running the Baja XL this February, a 2800 mile rally-raid style race from San Diego to Cabo and back. It looks like this is a go, so now I’m filling holes in my equipment list.

I considered battery powered impact, etc but decided to stick with air because I already own all the air tools and you can’t inflate tires with a battery charge rack. I have a small compressor now, that I’ll keep as emergency backup, but it takes forever and not nearly powerful enough to run air tools.

So. What is a good, reasonably priced, compressor w/tank I can use to air up and down and run an impact, etc…

I agree with App. Battery-powered tools and an electric compressor is the other option.

As noted, an engine driven compressor would be required to produce enough air to run air tools for more than a few seconds. The best choice for your purposes is a battery powered impact and a 12v compressor.

I own a couple of Viair 400 series compressors, which work just fine for 33" and 35" tires at a reasonable price point. If you want a faster compressor, and have the budget, I also have a ExtremeAire compressor hard mounted in my Sprinter which makes very quick work of filling 33" and 35" tires.

Ok if electric impact is the way to go, which one?

I choose my impact on based on the battery platform. I have found Milwaukee M12 and M18 tools to be very well built and reliable. They seem have the most extensive and varied offering of tools available on a common platform. Personally, I have found their M12 stubby impact to meet all of my impact related needs around the garage. I do not carry it in my bag of trail tools but would if I were running the Baja XL like the OP.

York will set a bead and run air tools.

A twin arb will do the same but york is faster. But... you can get a portable version of the arb so it can be used for other vechiles.

I assume a powertank, C02, will run tools as well. But my guess is you'd need a regulator.

I suppose with a large enough tank you could run any compressor though. You'd just need to figure out how much air you'll need stored for all the lugs and if it's quick enough to fill back up before you're ready to put them back on.

Battery powered is by far the easiest option though. But..... can't set a bead
