What have I gotten myself into?

After working on a 2004 Grand Cherokee for a family member for a while I caught the bug for a Jeep. But as much potential as the WJ had, it didn't fit what I wanted to use it for. I like camping and hunting and just fooling around outside and a Wrangler just seemed to fit that mindset better.

So I spent a few weeks roaming through FB marketplace until I found a rig that needed a bit of work but was within my budget. Here's a preview, the phrase "you get what you pay for" is extraordinarily accurate.

Looks pretty good from a distance it's when you get close the issues start piling up, not even counting the rattle can blue that I absolutely hate. I mean, "Forest Green" is my favorite color in all things and the PO did a crap job painting over it. But I digress.

For quick details, no top, "farm use" tags and no inspection for several years. Wheel spacers put on incorrectly to the point that it was only prayer that got me home after the purchasing it 45 miles away. Like, I really should have just pulled over and towed it on home but thankfully I made it.

The brakes were awful, pulled to the left terribly bad. Come to find out, the brake line to the passenger front had broken at some point and the PO just crimped it off right by the proportioning valve.

I plan to continue this thread with more stories and whining as I fight with this thing. But honestly, after owning it for 8 months and fixing it up a teeny little bit at a time, I'm madly in love with this beast. It's been a frustrating process, but I've enjoyed every step of it. And I'm just barely getting started.

I'm all about using what you have to get by. One of the PO of this thing did a lot of that. Some things make sense, some do not and some I'm just in awe that it worked.
I'm gonna post a few more pictures of the things I've found, and started fixing. And some things that are just flat frustrating.

Pretty sure that's not an original Jeep hinge...

I guess that technically qualifies as a fuel filler bezel...

Everybody needs a home. Even mice. Just, preferably not in the air filter box...

Mud dauber nests... EVERYWHERE!

Is that a ratchet strap? Uhh what's that holding up? Oh right... The fuel tank! Skid plates and proper bolts are over rated... (Hard to get a good picture of the tank and the web straps holding it up)

I'm sure 3 lug studs are plenty, right??

Hopefully you all can share in my pain and face palm moments and maybe even smile a bit with all this. 😁

There is some good meme material here! Glad you are rescuing this Jeep from a certain death on the farm. Looking forward to following the rehabilitation.

Did it come with a title?

It did actually! I've not checked the Carfax on it and for my own sanity I don't intend to.

Memes are the joy in life! I suspect the worst has not yet been discovered with this baby.
How'd it not shake you to death on the ride home with those wheels like that?

Oh it was a loooong stressful drive! A normally 45 minute drive took over two hours. For anybody ever using the wheel spacers to go to a different lug pattern, make sure to grind the original wheel lugs flat. The PO didn't:

At this point a carfax would be the least of your worries.

I have found some surprises on my LJ - in the end I own it and nothing I can do about it.

It's taken me three years to bring my "farm jeep" to its current condition. Good luck, and start a go-fund-me or a second/third job to support the refurbish job you've only scraped the surface on.

Wow!!! That's just insanity. It confirms my pessimistic outlook on people. Someone never taught that PO anything about anything. Wrong on so many levels. Good luck! I'm really interested to see you turn this one around.

You drove it home with that wheel like that?

Well, it didn't start like that. It had a wobble, but I couldn't imagine it would do that much that quickly. Another lesson learned, if you go to buy a vehicle that you know will need work, bring tools. At the very least, a tire iron to tighten lug nuts.

I have to see some suspension pics

I've got a few, like the broken track bar link...

How’s the frame any rot on it or torque boxes on the tub?

Thankfully, the PO did at least do some repair on the frame. The outside and the bottom of both sides.

But not the inside, or anything at all with the torque boxes.

The tub is... Yeah...

Is it the angle or does the caliper and brake pad look way off on the lower portion?

It's entirely possible. I have since replaced both front calipers, rotors and ran a new line to the passenger side.

I bought a cheap flux core welder and I've wanted to learn for a while. This is a bit more than I had in mind though. However, I'm still excited about the potential of this thing. By the time I get this thing dependable and looking good I'll know every inch of it like the back of my hand.

But did I mention freaking mud dauber nests??? I cleaned these out of the HVAC hose going to the passenger vent.
