What is the right coolant?

I have a lot of improvements planned to make to my 97 Sport (Replace fenders, interior carpeting, repaint faded hardtop, etc.), and do some much needed maintenance on some systems. One of those systems is the cooling system which I am going to flush out. I had the engine replaced and they replaced the coolant with the usual green coolant. I have been reading up and have seen that the recommended coolant to run in the engine is an HOAT Mopar coolant. Is that correct? I have been looking at sites for the coolant and their vehicle fitment is conflicting. One site says it fits my Jeep and another site says it doesn't. Could anyone recommend the correct coolant or link a page for it?

Nearly any coolant can be used but propylene-glycol based coolants should be avoided as they provide less freeze protection and less corrosion protection. HOAT Is what the factory switched to as it's simply a better and more protective coolant. That's why Jeep switched to it. We consistently recommend Zerex G-05 because it's a HOAT that is known to work extremely well. I also use Zerex G-05 in my cars aside from my Jeeps.

G-05 from Zerex is great but make sure to thoroughly flush the cooling system first. Make sure too to only mix it with distilled water which is cheap to buy by the gallon in any grocery store.

Yes, X2 to what Jerry said.

ONLY use distilled water to mix it with, nothing else. Tap water or anything else other than distilled water will cause your cooling system to develop rust due to the minerals in the water.

Properly flush your cooling system, and I would suggest a few gallons of distilled water to flush it with as well. Don't use the hose. While that works, it can get tap water stuck in the system, which is not good as previously mentioned.

Thank you Chris! This really helps a lot. My Jeep needs a lot of work, but with everything I plan on putting into her, she's gonna be running better than when I first got her and maintenance like flushing out the old coolant for the G-O5 is going to make sure she stays running well.

I doubt there are many nights that get cold enough in Austin to require the HOAT coolant. If you are already running the green stuff I would continue with it. There are several companies that make a 'water wetter' product that can be added to the radiator to improve both corrosion protection and heat/cool transfer properties for little money. I have used the Royal Purple stuff with good effect on cooling. You do not want to be running a combo of the orange and the green coolants so an extreme flush would be required. Easier to stick with what is in there now. If you lived in Alaska that would be one thing, but Texas doesn't require the extra bit of protection. This is my opinion, just my opinion.

Like my 1998 model, your 1997 Sport was shipped from the factory with the green coolant in it.

I have been using the regular old Prestone green coolant in my Jeep since it was new. My Jeep is now 22 years old and has 150K miles on it. I flush it out and replace it about every 5 - 6 years and I haven't had any problems. I have always mixed it with *distilled* water, and I am still on my original thermostat and water pump!
