What is this object found in my rear diff?

I bought this spare Dana 35 a few months back because it had 410 gears which I eventually want to swap into my 99 TJ and possibly do a super 35 upgrade as well.

Today I decided to drain it, clean it up and pull the axles then look everything over. As I was cleaning as much gear oil out of the diff as I could my finger caught an object lodged in the groove that goes around the inner edge of the differential opening. Anyone have an idea what this is and where it would come from?

That’s a roller bearing, from one of the differential bearings. Maybe from an old bearing, that was already replaced. Possibly an existing bearing, that will further self-destruct, and take much more along with it. At any rate, now you’ll need to pull the differential completely apart and check all bearings out.

Thanks! So that's issue#1.

I'm also noticing a very slight amount of in/out play on the pinion when pushing in pulling out on the yoke. Is it normal to have any play?

No, its not normal. The crush sleeve is a preload device for those pinion bearings. I'll also add that roller is wasted and if the others look like that you will need to replace the pinion and carrier bearings. Better eye ball those spider gears as well as the R&P for pitting and the like.

It sure looks like a previous bearings roller.I don't think a roller could come out without the bearing being completely toast since the cage would be mangled. No there shouldn't be any play in the pinion bearings.

Oh,and the obligatory smartazz pic to go with your thread title 😂

Dang Ricky, looks like you had a fun new years. 😜

Not drinking after some people for sure.

How was New Years at Ricks?

“I left with a bad taste in my mouth”

Actually slipped and fell off some steps with algae growing on them new years eve.
So I spent new years on the couch with a messed up back watching tv.

Those parties are around, but they aren't for me!

Ouch. I remember my first beer.

Didn’t land on an upright bottle by any chance did ya?

Seriously good thing you are ok- crap like that literally kills people every year. Treated deck steps are the worst, then polished concrete.

Bringing wood inside the GF's house. It was indeed shitty treated wood steps on the north side of the building.
