The c-clips themselves don't fail, that end of the axle shaft is protected by being inside the carrier. The shaft likely failed just outside the carrier.Buy it cheap.... quick. Looks like a c clip failed.

Not likely. The crosspin would have jammed into the housing and locked up the entire assembly. Both wheels would have backed out as well.Another possibility is the little screw that hold the spider gear pin in place could have fallen out allowing the pin to come out thus letting the c-clip fall out of place.
