So I’m in the processes of replacing the tires on my teardrop after getting a puncture in a sidewall. I pulled the good tire off and noticed a small amount of grease splash on the outside of the rim. The aluminum rims have a center cup. When I looked inside the cup it was full of grease. About 1/8-3/16” all around. The hub and flange are soaked in grease. The bearings themselves don’t appear to be starved of grease. My concern is that the grease was the consistency between bearing grease and gear lube. Almost like yogurt. The color looks good. I bought this used from a “reputable” dealer and they told me that they serviced the bearings. The hard buildup on the seal tells me different. I’ve done many bearing services and never found grease with this consistency. Usually it is much firmer. The spindles have Zerk fittings. My question is was the wrong grease used or did they just pump in regular grease and the dissimilar greases worked against each other? Luckily the bearings look fine but I’ll replace them along with the seals just for good measure. I’m glad I got that flat tire and found this issue before any damage was done. I’m heading to the desert next week and it would have sucked to be stranded in the middle of nowhere in the heat.

Axel is a Dexter 2000# Torflex with E-Z Lube hub.

If the grease looks like that but there is grease and the bearings are alright I would just repack it if the races aren’t burnt. Not all greases are the same. Maybe the seals are going out? Any water or evidence of water getting in?
