When did your clutch master / slave let go?

Happy new year everyone,

My 06 TJ with the 4.0 and NSG370 just hit 183k miles. The clutch slave and master cylinder is original and I swear, the past few days the clutch is occasionally harder to push and I feel like the engagement point moves almost to the floor UNTIL I pump the clutch a few times, then it goes back to normal. I considered it maybe could be the TOB but I had the clutch replaced 20k miles ago and a bad throw out bearing doesn't cause the engagement point to shift correct?

Weird part is, the fluid is full, it doesn’t seem to be externally leaking anything, so it might be failing internally? Does this sound like the clutch slave? I figured I got my money’s worth out of it anyways at 183k miles. When do they normally go out on TJs?

Btw, for those that did replace it, which brand did you choose? I am not seeing a lot of good replacement options from reputable brands on RockAuto. I am seeing Dorman (skeptical), SKP (skeptical), and a few others that I've never heard of. Can I get away with just replacing the slave instead of the master and slave as a unit?

Luk brand sealed master/slave unit for around $100 is the way to go. It's easier that way and you won't get air into the system, that requires bleeding it. I've only had one fail ever. My Jeep would stall when stopped, with the pedal depressed. No other symptoms.

I'm not able to find the Luk master/slave unit for the 05 or 06 models :( It's only for the other model years. I'd imagine if I don't change mine out soon enough, I'm also going to start stalling at lights.

I looked on Schaeffler's website (Schaeffler is the manufacturer/Distributor of LuK components) and they only offer the slave cylinder and master cylinder separate for the 2003-2006 years. 2002 and prior, you can get the entire assembly. Not sure why.

Developed a leak at the plunger rod inside. Saw it dripping on the driver side floor mat and clutch was engaging lower and lower.

FWIW, I didn't have time to search around and bought a Duralast master & slave from Autozone... it failed 3000 miles later.

Replaced it under warranty and the this one is creaking like a rocking chair on a wood porch.

Just order the Luk Clutch Master Cylinder and Slave from Summit. Half the price of the DuraLast.. which didn't.

The unfortunate part is the Luk Master Cylinder and Slave will not fit my 06, I read the bolt patterns are a little different or something like that. So it looks like I'm going to have to gamble. I ended up going with the SKP part on rockauto because it had the heart next to it so I'm assuming most people buy that, and honestly I'm expecting it to die within a few thousand miles. We'll see.

My clutch pedal went to the floor but I could not find any leaks etc. Replaced with Mopar unit and all was well. Pretty easy swap. I dont know exactly when or how many miles I had on it but it is still under 40K so that was really early.

Here is a very expensive Mopar unit on ebay: https://www.ebay.com/p/17009569604?...d=link&campid=5337789113&toolid=20001&mkevt=1
