It is my understanding that some parts for the 3550 can be hard to source so this is why people swap to an ax15 which is still in production and can be purchased brand new from multiple vendors.
There are used ones out there but you must remember these transmissions are getting old and most will have high miles so you may not get the longevity you are seeking.
NV3550 is a great transmission. If and when mine dies I'll be trying to find a replacement 3550. Mainly because the first gear on the 3550 is 4.01 and the AX15 is 3.83, losing crawl ratio is the wrong direction IMO.
Out of curiosity, why would you swap out to an AX-15? I was under the impression that the NV3550 was a good transmission (Speaking from owing and very much enjoying one myself for 160,000 miles)

The AX-15 is easier to source and find parts for. IMO the 3550 is a better trans but it was only made between 2000-2004 for the TJ and 2000-2001 for the XJ.
Since most people don't have the tools to work on the 3550 finding someone to rebuild it is quite difficult. On the other hand, the AX15 was around for 12 years so parts are easier to find, people can rebuild them, and remanufactured units are easier to come by.
Also, from what I gather the ax15 is a plug-and-play swap. (don't quote me on that)
The way I look at it is even if the nv3550 costs 1k more than an the ax15 I'd be ahead, or breaking even, since I'd need to regear in order to keep the same 1st gear crawl ratio.
4.01*5*4.88=98 nv3550
3.83*5*4.88=93 ax15 3.83*5*5.13=98 (ax15 w/ regear to 5.13)
Also, the more people who buy nv3550's the more likely they'll still be available when I need one
