Why do folks black out their license plate when posting pictures?

Good question. You cannot really look the plates up on the internet to see who they belong too. I did it too just following the flock. Hmmmmm? Someone on here is savvy to that question.
Even if you could look it up.. No one drives around town with their plates covered. All I can think of is that folks worry other TJ owners are going to come steal their ride. I mean.. I live in NY. My Jeep is a daily driver. How many people, jeep owners or otherwise, see my plate and registration info every day?
So do you (they) get out and hide their plate when they drive cross-country? Through a not-so-nice, low-energy area?
There is actually a decent reason to, even though I never have. If your license plate is not posted anywhere on the web, very little information can be found about you. If you post a photo of your vehicle and the license plate is shown, the web bots will make it pretty easy to find that photo just by searching the plate number. For example, if I search my truck license plate currently, a bunch of photos on one of the forums come up. Not really a fan of that.
Lots of psychos on the road, if they get mad at you for some reason it would be bad if searching your plate number helped them find where you live or work or similar. It’s probably not a big deal overall but it’s one more step to help protect against yourself.

There is nothing for a search to pull up if your plates are not visible on the web. So no need to cover them in person. If they are posted all over the web they will come up in a search, which may or may not be a bad thing depending on what else is in the posts they’re in.
I get your point, but I drive all day with my cell phone on me pinging towers as I go. I travel with an EZPass in the Jeep (two actually). I use my credit card all over the place. I have a securities license. The Feds know my every step. You don't need my license plate to find me.

I’m not worried about the feds, I don’t like the idea of what other people on the road could do if it was easier to find me if they thought I wronged them. Still, probably not ever going to put in the effort to block them because it’s low risk. But there is merit to doing so.
I never worry about it.
If someone stole my identity they would give it back.

I dont think I ever have done it on this forum, and it’s pretty much the only place I post pictures of my tj on the internet. But if I ever do post pictures anywhere else online, I’ll usually blur it… I’m not entirely sure why, haha!!
The same reason you'd use a VPN on your computer or Malware or Anti-Virus. Or using two-factor authentication to add a layer of protection to keep you safe. Don't assume that just because we are a family of Jeep owners than there aren't trolls on this site that would take your license plate number and look it up online and come steal your jeep.

Most folks don't have a clue about online security. If they did, their behaviors would be vastly different. Talk to a cyber security guy sometime, you won't sleep for a couple of nights...

I believe that. It is diabolical really.
All forms of online theft and similar are so prevalent. Get 4 people together …3 have had something happen.
That’s the first reason I’ve seen that makes sense.
