Why do folks black out their license plate when posting pictures?

Junior Samples - my hero!

Maybe they are blacking them out because they are all stolen?

I don't know why anyone would steal a tj jeep haha. They are not a very good road car. They are good offroad but that is about it. And they are not worth much compared to other cars you can steal. Is it common for them to be stolen?

I do it because once a picture is on the web it can stay there forever. Just because there is not an easy way to get your info from a plate right now doesn't mean it will always be that way.

Another outdoor forum that I was a moderator on, some guy got all huffy and asked for my address so he could come kick my butt. I posted it for him or anyone to see.

He never showed up.

I really don't care, between my Military service and me being an FFL holder for a while, I guess most folks can find me pretty easy.

If you lived 3 hours from Mexico, you would know why people steal them.

Anyone can be found if they have any online activity. I have give up trying so hard to hide it, though I haven’t posted my address for some internet tough guy. :ROFLMAO:

🍺 to you!!

Well I was younger and dumber :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

If you ever meet me you would say I was real dumb, 5'8" and 185lbs. A strong wind could probably whip me

Can't agree with this..
My TJ is a daily driver and I think it drives fantastic. I just swapped the stock drag link and tie rod for the Currie RockJock CurrectLync and it made a huge improvement on what was already a good handler. I just turned 100k. I'm on top of anything that needs attention.
Plus.. it's a Jeep not a car.

ANYBODY WHO CALLS A JEEP A CAR SHOULD NOT BE ON THIS FORUM !!!

This thread has me reconsidering why I black mine out 🤔
But I think it’s about PII (personally identifiable information) and connecting non-PII to PII. It’s more about that than the Jeep itself getting stolen.

As an example, if somebody on here has posts about an annual/upcoming trip in the works, and valuable tools they have in their garage, or - I hate to even think it, but pics of their kids and visitation schedules or whatnot - some sicko could put the pieces together and find what he wants when it’s unprotected. With AI this is only getting easier for the degenerates with nothing better to do and twisted morals.

Hopefully I’m just paranoid - but it’s easy insurance and I figure if Google maps does it, maybe I should too!

This is exactly it. I don’t want anyone on the internet knowing my name, when I am not home and or what my address is. I try not to connect my very limited social media (hobby forums) to this information. With sites available today bad actors can connect the dots easily. I don’t know if the below sites work but likely they do.

Yes my plates are on display every where I drive but I can’t do anything about that risk.

While your plates are on display driving around, they are not readily connected to any other usable data, like they are when tied to all of your timestamped posts online.

Of course these days anything is possible for the motivated and tech savvy bad guy, but it’s still worth making it harder and being less of a target (I think)

Years ago, like back when fbook & craigslist were still new, I was told there was some insurance scam where people would find a locally posted tag and car, then file a simple claim against that vehicle, something like vehicle x backed into me in a parking lot, here's their name, tag and vehicle. IDK for sure, but that's a thing I remember from years ago.

Personally, I simply prefer to limit personal info posted. Little things like I won't provide my actual birthday/year when requested/required add up. I don't do social media for that reason, and I will not post pic of myself or my kids/family, even though there are times I'd like to share.

I’m very similar there. Even though I’m a teenager still, I’ve never had social media, and never post pictures of myself online. Birthdays are almost always fake as well…

Easy answer = OPSEC

We live in a world of weak & mentally ill human beings
Then theres the “gibs me dat” factor in certain areaa
Dont be naive, this is our world

There are jealous people, vindictive people, and mentally ill people all over the internet that can and will do you harm. A forum of any enthusiasts can have them, and I have seen it in the racing forums, gun forums, etc.

A law man in Texas had a member from outside his state call his employer about his behavior on a hardcore racing forum because he said mean words and they got butthurt. Not kidding

GPS locations in photos can lead a rapist, pedophile, and thief to your residence. If you have a pretty wife, or pretty daughter, you best understand how to turn off Geo-locations on EVERY mobile phone. Hell now with the gay stuff, watch out for your little boys

While they also exist in public, you are an anonymous character until you engage, and these whackadoos have been found trying to get people fired from their employers on many forums as well for having opinions that dont “toe the line” of the WOKE agenda, or they get butthurt

You have the ability to reveal who you are selectively or openly. If I was a retiree, probably would not care as much as a worker in the new DEI /Woke agenda world of employment

A bigger risk for some might be the location data from the photo. A car collector I know won't allow anyone to photograph his collection at his home with a cell phone for fear it will get posted on the web with the exact location contained in the metadata for anyone to look at.
