Why is the NSG370 so hated?

Most of my disdain is right there as you noted. They shift like crap, I've been around many that were the second and third replaced under warranty by the dealer. They just really aren't that special and you still need all the same gearing in the diffs and t-case that all manuals need for anything serious.

Thanks MrBlaine, I was looking for a 05-06 TJR and now, due to your comment looking for a 03-04!

I have 170k miles on mine in a 2006 LJ. Only issue I have is the reverse gear likes to pop out, like everyone else has said. When I initially put it in reverse, I have to keep ahold of the shifter until I start to roll back then you can feel it fully "pop" into gear. If I don't hold the shifter it will grind. That works the majority of the time, but when I'm on a steep incline I can still have issues. Around town and where I wheel here in NC it's not a big deal, but I would be really nervous to take it on some of the switchback trails out west where you have to do three point turns occasionally, like black bear pass for example.

I wouldn't let that bother me. Advance Adapters has a swap kit consisting of a bell housing with the CPS on the correct side and everything else you need to swap in the AX-15 or NV 3550. Retains the same flywheel so the timing notches are correct and the rest is the same for either of those transmissions. The only difficult part might be sourcing the correct center console front half and floor plate which would be from the earlier models, preferably from when they started the 2 piece version.

I like mine. I don't try to shift fast. Just slow steady shifts. It's a Jeep not a sports car. Mine shifts in all forward gears well. I do run Red Line MTL and a moly additive for lube. I do have some reverse issues but have found it works best to put it in low range and then reverse. I also try to park so that I can pull out forward vs putting it in reverse. Doesn't cause me any serious problems....at least not yet.

@Link what Moly additive are you using? I have the MTL and am preparing to change. Truck only has 21K miles on it, but am baselining all the fluids. No issues and the PO did a lot of off-roading, but he took careful care of the truck.

No trouble with mine. Getting it into reverse can be difficult but it never pops out. I installed a B&M shifter and that really improved it.

This situation was the last straw for my original NSG370. I was on a very narrow trail in CO when I had to turn around at a snow bank facing downhill. I almost couldn't get into R with my front right down in a ditch.

After that trip, I swapped in a High Impact rebuilt NSG370. No more issues. Works perfectly fine. And swapping the shift tower will NOT fix the reverse issue. I'm running the original 20 year old 135k mile shift tower. That mechanism is tight with no noticeable wear.

This thread inadvertently speaks volumes about the NSG370. I enjoyed the 83:1 crawl ratio I had with mine, but having to eventually jam it into R and double clutch to get it in 1st got old.

I add a couple oz of Tufoil. Been using it in gearboxes for many years. Great stuff. Generally I'm not a fan of additives most of the time but Tufoil has impressed me over the years I've been using it. Been using it since the mid 1990s. The Red Line oil is also a great oil and is GL4 rated so ideal for our Jeeps.

If I had a transmission that dictated how I parked so I didn't have to reverse out of the spot, that pile of mechanical poo would be in dumpster so fast it might combust from the friction flying through the air. That said, you know what my crawl ratio is? Neither do I, nor do I care.

The amazing thing about that mechanical poo was a guy bought it locally for $500. I told him like 5 times the reverse is crap and it needs to be rebuilt. $500.

Some people just have to have something to complain about. I like mine. It's not perfect but it's a Jeep....none of them are perfect.
