Wildman's TJ is getting a face lift

Good work. Can’t wait to see how the tranny mount works out. I actually received my motor/tranny mounts from Holley yesterday also. Their instructions make it seem simple.

It's very easy to install. I can't tell you how the motor mounts since mine was a 4 popper before and then I had Magnum V-8 mounts. From the looks of them they should be fairly simple also.

@NashvilleTJ when about did you swap your power steering pump to the PSC pump? I think I remember you getting the wrong pulley the first time around? I'm just trying to double check that I've got the correct pulley.

Thanks.

Hope your vacation is going well.

I originally ran the stock Ram pump on the Hemi - as at first I could not find a PSC pump which would fit - but it could not keep up with the ram and the hydro-boost. I was able to find a PSC pump that fit, and it completely solved the problem.

Although I can’t specifically remember why, I did not run the finned PSC pulley. Mine is solid, and may be the one from the stock pump. I’ll have to go back and look.

Vaca was great, but I came home from the Mexico leg with Covid. It’s really knocking me on my ass.

Yes I remember when you first did your swap that PSC didn't offer a pump for the Hemi but then you were having issues with the stock pump not being able to keep up with the HydroBoost & the hydro assist. I thought I remembered that you'd had a problem with the original pully that PSC had sent you not fitting since the bore wasn't the correct size for the shaft size.

I'm hoping I've got the correct pulley since stock is a 7 rib design and the PSC is a 6 rib design. So I'll have to source a 6 rib belt instead of the stock 7 rib belt also. Just another item to add to my list of parts that are specifically for my Jeep.

DAMN..... That sucks, I've been super lucky and haven't had COVID yet... knock on wood or whatever is the voodoo for scaring the crud away. I've got enough other issues I don't need to have that added on. Hope you get to feeling better soon.

Shooting for the end of July to having the Jeep running & driving. Will of course have to get some seat time and get a new tune from FRP once it's running.

After reading your explanation of how your O2 sensor failed on your wideband I'm wondering if mine hasn't failed also. So once I get it running I'll have to test it out and verify if it's good or not.

One item that was missing from the swap was this support piece that bolts to the engine and transmission. It's a dust shield also for the torque converter. Another one of the screwups done by the shop that did the swap.
Of course after I'd bought this used part off Ebay I found that Holley sold it for just a little more than I'd paid.

I'll bead blast it and then paint it before I install it.

Just a tidbit of information concerning the engine.
The company I got the adapter plates from, MMX was able to verify which 5.7 truck engine I have.
It wasn't the news I'd hoped to hear but at least I now know. I have a 2003 5.7 truck engine. So replacing the heads was a good choice. I'll have to do a little more research on this year's issues to know if there are other things I should be concerned with.

Engine is sitting in the Jeep. And I tweaked the passenger side motor mount a little bit but I think I've got it sitting where it's going to stay. If I wanted to redo my shock mounts or add more bumpstop I could get more clearance for the drivers side motor mount and the upper link. But as it sits now I can't push the engine rear ward anymore.

But I've got more clearance between the radiator/fan now than I had with the Magnum engine.

It's about a finger width between the threads on the water pump and the fan.

Jeff cut the threads off his like I'd done on the Magnum engine.

I've got the thickness of my hand between the firewall and the heads.

Drivers side space between the head and firewall.

A thing of beauty, Dude, a thing of beauty.

Does it look to have about the same amount of clearance that you have? How much space do you have between your heads & firewall?

To totally change the subject for a minute. I need to replace my GPS in my TJ since my Lowrance is outdated and there isn't any new software for it. I know you have a Lowrance HDS 7 I think? What mapping software are you using? Or does it come stock with software that will work? The one I have wasn't made as a fish finder it was their Off-Road edition they offered for a few years.
I thought about getting one of these since they are already setup for Off-Road and have mapping software loaded already but I haven't compared their prices to just buying a standard version.

Thermostat housing done. Looks a lot better than it did before.

The transmission support/dust shield is turning out really nice too. I'm liking this paint. Might have to get some other colors along the way.

This is the second coat on the bottom area. The top is already painted twice.

I have a fingers width clearance at the firewall. Never an issue. Looks like you have plenty. But I’d go ahead and cut the shaft on the pump.

I love the HDS7 for it’s ruggedness, accuracy, and screen clarity. I also have several areas - like Moab - for which I have purchased satellite imagery. I have built my own maps for many offroad parks, and also purchased gpx files for others. I use a few mapping software packages, including Garmin Basecamp and ExpertGPS. I’ve taken Google Satellite imagery and turned that into pretty good maps for several parks in my part of the country.

That said - the Lowrance platform is a pain in the ass. It uses a propriety map data format, instead of using standard gpx files like just about every other platform. I use a conversion program called GPSBabel to do my conversions. But if you don’t get the conversion and versioning just right, it fails - and gives no indication as to why. I curse the thing every time I load maps to it.

Also, it used to be that you could build your own sattellite imagery for the Lowrance. Again, a proprietary format which requires a conversion program - built by Lowrance. That’s how places like Rugged Routes does it - that is where I have gotten my sat maps in the past. But Lowrance has now stopped providing that software, so I can’t create my own imagery.

For a dedicated GPS setup, I’ve looked closely at the Garmin Tread platform, and like it a lot. I’d consider it if I were swapping. I run the Garmin Zumo - which is very similar to the Tread - on the bikes, and I love it. No data conversions needed, and you can easily get their Birdseye sat imagery.

But if I were swapping, I’d also look closely at a platform which would run someting like OnX. There are many options these days. But I still lean toward something more rugged than a tablet.

Thanks Jeff for all the help & support. We're getting close now can't ya feel it? Damn I might actually have a running working Jeep before the end of the year.... Knock on wood... I'd better not jinx myself here.

Yes the Lowrance software was always a PITA. I spent days loading the Moab trails into mine and then when I got there none of them worked like they were supposed to. Now the software that mine uses will only run on a computer that has Windows XP on it. So that is why I'm looking to upgrade to something hew.
Yes I have Garmin Zumo on my current bike and I had it on previous bikes too. I even had one of their GPS units in my old truck. The Kenwood in my motorhome has Garmin on it too.
The Insane Audio stereo I have allows me to run apps like OnX and AllTrails.
I've looked at the Garmin Tread before so I will go take another look at it.

Just got an email from UPS saying my heads are going to arrive on Monday instead of Tuesday like originally stated so I might be pulling a marathon work party once they get here. Then I'll hate to have to leave to go work on the nieces truck but I promised. And she needs her rig running.

Yes! But we're all holding a collective breath based on your journey. 🙏

I'm more excited that you'll have them in-hand before you depart rather than you trying to marry up your departure with their arrival Tuesday. Or worse — coordinating for someone else to make sure they aren't sitting on your front porch...

If Monday arrival means you burn the candle and work them into the engine...

I'm trying not to get too far ahead of myself with it cause if I have another major setback I might just throw a match on the whole thing.

My daughter is here so they wouldn't have sat outside too long. And I'm lucky we don't have the porch pirates around here or at least I haven't had anything taken. I did have one UPS driver put my packages over on the lot next to me. Took about 2 weeks before the packages were finally found.
But the drive I have now knows me and knows my project. He likes to check in once in a while to see how it's coming along.

No live video streaming... I'd have to edit out all the curse words and while I share most of my blunders I still wouldn't want anyone watching me. But if I'm burning the midnight oil I'll be making posts as I go along.
The main thing is that I want to get the heads installed and the pushrod lengths measured so that I can order them before I leave. That way I will hopefully have them by the time I get back home.
Since this is a NEW kit being offered by FRP and I'm the first one to be doing this he wants to have a few kits done and see if the lengths stay constant before including pushrods in the kits.

Would have been farther along if I hadn't ran into technical difficulties.
Sparked my welder only to find out that the batteries in my welding helmet were dead.... So a trip into town and luckily the first store I went to had the correct size.
I used my old helmet to tack the motor mounts in with. Now I know why I'd bought the better helmet.
