BMW bought the Rover Group, and the Mini brand as a result, back in the 1990's, and continued producing the "classic" Mini up until 2000. The new BMW MINI was introduced in 2001 in Europe and 2002 in the US. Whether BMW or MINI branded, the parts all follow BMW standard identification and some parts are shared, not just with BMW but other Euro brands.
I would consider it a BMW, and for whatever reason, it's listed as such on my registration paperwork as well. But technically MINI is a brand of BMW. Generally, I have no issue with the brand and thought my e90 was pretty solid car (albeit an electronic nightmare). The only reason I purchased the e90 was because of my experience with the MINI.
BMW sweet spot for me is the 2002 and E30....and I wouldn't own anything of the MINI brand post 2nd gen R56 cars, I don't even like the way they look anymore. They've become a caricature of themselves.

Technically speaking, they still don't....but that's a whole other matter entirely...

I was never a huge fan of the platform , but having an LS V-8 made it almost Okay in my book.
Yeah my understanding is the aero was basically the trailblazer SS with an AWD transfer case and a slightly nicer interior. Plus cooler badging
