Clutch or master / slave cylinder?

Me: Having clutch problems, and I need a slave cylinder for my jeep.

Dude: what year?

Me: 1997

Dude: 4.0 or 2.5L?

Me: 4.0L

Dude: Manual or automatic

Me: ..................here's your sign.

Kind of reminds me of when I tried to report a tree down on the phone line. Habib ask me 3 times if it was a buried cable. Took 20 minutes for them to figure they need to send someone out. There's another down on it now but I aint wasting a day going through that again. They can come out after it snaps a few poles.

That’s too funny lol

So….. yall think a new clutch would fix my jeep? Several ppl saying it’s not the clutch…. But the master & slave cylinder didn’t fix the problem…. Idk what to do but I know my girl needs to be up and going…. Like yesterday….

I don't know that you need a new clutch, or TOB or pilot bearing. But I don't think you're going to solve the problem without dropping the transmission and if you're doing that then you might as well replace everything.

So I ended up putting a new clutch kit and new flywheel on my jeep…. I even changed out the pilot bearing too…. I cheated and got the puller for it at harbor freight… worth every penny of the $27 I spent on it…

It was the hardest thing I have ever done to a vehicle. And I done it all by my self…. The clutch and things in the bell housing wasn’t the hard part lol the hard part was getting the tranny off the engine and then getting it back on lol but I got it!!! That flywheel weighed approximately 30 pounds and I knew there was no way I could hold it up and put a couple bolts in……. So……. After some pondering 🤔 I had an idea lol I took a rag and folded it up and laid it on my scissor jack then put the flywheel on it and let it do my lifting lol of course it took several ups and downs to get it lined up lol but I got lined up and some bolts in lol

I also changed out my transfer case fluid and transmission fluid…. But nothing puzzled me about that tho. The amount that came out of both was almost the same amount…. If I recall right the tranny (nv3550) called for 2.1 quarts and transfer case called for 1.1 quart. So I don’t know why they both had almost the same amount in each… I poured the used fluid in to two separate (empty) bottles that were identical….

On both I took the fill plugs loose first lol and when I took the drain plug off the tranny I bout had my self a massive heart attack!!!! Cuz at first I was unaware that there was a magnet on it lol I’ll post pics of everything…. The teeth on my pressure plate were almost all missing tips!!! The throw out bearing was bad, wasn’t much left to the clutch plate… the flywheel didn’t look too swift either lol

So my next question is…. About tranny fluid.

I know lots of ppl talk good about royal purple… but I couldn’t find any local… so after doing some reading I read that the tranny needed GL4 rated fluid… so I got valvoline…. I’m probly gonna order 2 quarts of royal purple. Cuz when im shifting gears i occasionally get a slight grind….. that’s not all the time tho. And it’s only when im going down the road changing gears…. It goes in first gear really good…. But occasionally has a slight grind going in to 2, 3, and 4 gear. I don’t use 5th gear…. No need for it cus I only drive like 40-50 mph lol

So do yall thing a fluid change to royal purple will help???

Also do yall think I need to bleed my slave cylinder to make sure I got all the air out of it??

I’ll post pics of the old clutch kit stuff….

Thanks for all the advice yall have gave me thru this!!! I feel like I officially earned the right to be called a mechanic now lol 😂 I’m rather proud of my self lol majority of ppl I talk to told me I’d never be able to do the clutch job alone….. I PROVED THEM WRONG!!!! It took me a bit to do it cuz I was working 8-10 hours a day then going to my bosses farm shop to work on my jeep for 4-5 hours… made for long days lol but thank god I got my mom who put supper up for me to have to heat up when I came in at night lol

I feel like I can do any thing I set my mind to! Ppl had me doubting myself but that crop won’t happen again tho lol

Most of us recommend Redline MT-90.

Solo installing a flywheel is a PIA.

Glad you got it done!

Most jobs aren't nearly as hard as you might think they are. Usually the challenges are attention to detail, proper procedure, and special tools, all of which can usually be overcome by most people.

Sometimes you need to look at your smartphone for info, which eliminates a couple people. :p

I usually go to YouTube and look at about a dozen videos and then pick the one or two that actually show the best way to tackle the job. My next project is to replace the failed internal slave cylinder on my 89 YJ and do the clutch while I have everything apart. Unfortunately there are two different spline patterns for my year so I can’t order the clutch until I remove the old one.
Also I have the Chiltons for the YJ.

For you young folks Chiltons Repair Manuals are what we used before there was such a thing as the internet, they gave you the step by step procedure with black and white photos.

Chilton and Haynes were the Google when Google wasn't cool!!!!!

I had a ton of both of them.
