TJ side markers

Hey everyone,

Tried to look for something on here but hadn't found it.

Has anyone taken the flares off the stock fenders but retained use of the side marker lights? I want to ditch them for that little extra clearance and don't feel like buying new flares just for lights.

I think he was talking about the side marker lights and not the front turn signals.

Yeah what Jerry said. I would keep the actual fenders, but ditch the plastic flare. And I’m fairly sure my state requires the side markers.

If you are lucky you may be able to find a light like the one linked below that would fit in the larger of the holes left behind from the flares and use the stock wiring.

FYI make sure not to replace that side marker with an LED bulb. Doing so places a diode into that circuit which will affect how that circuit works. Stay with a standard incandescent bulb there.

How do the LEDs affect the circuit ? I see brake and head light upgrades with LED lights. Could you give a bit more detail ? Thanks

That particular circuit changes polarity depending on if the headlight switch is on or off. Incandescent bulbs don't care which way the current is flowing through them so it works fine either way. LED bulbs not only care, they also block the current flow in the wrong direction. In this case the side marker lights would change how they work when the headlights are on or off.

The side markers use a floating ground. With an LED, they are either on, or off and use a polarized ground. So when the running lights come on, they can’t change state.

You can use a bridge rectifier (for each side) or a series of relays and a single diode for each side.

Jerry, tagging on this old post trying to figure out marker light circuitry. Passenger side bulb lights very dimly. I just installed new socket both driver and passenger read 11.4-11.5 volts. Even took working bulb from driver side and installed in passenger side, same problem.

One of the wires is probably corroded or chaffed. One little strand of copper will show good voltage but would have too much resistance to flow the current that a full bundles of strands would. I would do a voltage drop test and then remove the plastic wire loom and trace the wire while looking for a problem. Look closely at where wire goes into connectors too.
