I'm not even shitting you here.

Got a little bored today and went looking for something, ahem, entertaining to burn a few minutes while the pork roast finished cooking on the Traeger.

So, I put "Liberal Preppers" into the search engine and awaited the results. Holy Smokes! Our new Commander in Chief has caused the liberal wing to absolutely loose their water! I thought that Obama tweaked a few folks out, but this is absolutely hilarious... The Liberals have discovered Survivalist Theory!

Now, I'm a homesteader by birth and tradition, so don't get me wrong here. Oregon could figuratively burn down and I'd be good to go indefinitely. It's not a new thing, or in anyway strange to me, to be independent of the "grid" or to have all aspects of my life covered for any normal or reasonable occurrence. It's a family / cultural, clan if you will, tradition.

The amount of hyperbole and misinformation that these newly minted survivalists / preppers are engaging in hasn't been seen since the Y2K non-apocalypse. I can't even begin to describe it in terms that would communicate it.

Guns! Food! Chickens! Live off the land and hunt! Make a Prius a survival vehicle!

If you get bored, try doing a search yourself. There is extremely high entertainment value out there to be had for the cost of a few electrons.

Well, this is perfect for anyone who is in the business of selling "survival gear" and tools. They can make an absolute killing off of some of these rich yuppies who have nothing better to do with their money.

I always find it amusing how whenever a new president gets elected, the other side is absolutely fearful that the end of the world is upon us. People can be so stupid sometimes, I'll tell you.

And if it truly is the end of the world, I wouldn't be so concerned about having enough stuff to survive. I'd be more concerned about defending myself. Because let me tell you, if it's hell or high water and someone has something that someone else needs, my guess is that they'll use force to take it. I'm not saying it's right, but if the whole world is in survival mode, you can bet that no one will play nicely.

I just watched a show this weekend on Discovery, or something similar, called "10 ways the world could end". It was, obviously, a 10 part series. The one I watched was about how all it would take is for our power grid to go down and we'd be doing just as Chris said, "taking" shit from those who can't defend themselves and so on. It was interesting to say the least. Truly survival of the "fittest." That being said, I would doubt that many of these "liberal survivalists" could defend themselves very well. Most, if not all, of them are probably from the city, or 'burbs, and have never even set foot in the woods. Even if they could kill an animal for food, which would probably make them cry, they wouldn't know what to do with it next.

The sad part is, in that scenario, that's exactly when you need, to play nice.

There's a reason why man invented agriculture and organized into social structures.

If you think you'll disappear into the woods and hunt and fish your way to survival, I'll make sure you get a proper burial.

I think the power grid thing is that one that most people need to be concerned about. That one scares me.

I'm not a walking dead fan, but I've seen it enough to know that they've pretty much got it right. In a end of the world situation people would take what they want. YES, you would have good people who didn't do this, but you'd also have a LOT of bad people who did whatever they wanted.

My thoughts exactly. Let's say the power grid goes out. Well guess what, all those prisons are no longer secure, so all those felons are out on the loose. If you think they're going to place nice, you're dead wrong.

I'm not trying to say I would straight up kill someone to get what I need, I have a moral compass. However, I am prepared to defend myself should someone attempt to bring harm to me or my family.

Much like yourself, I wouldn't be heading for the woods right away (I'd wait it out a while to see what happens), but defending ones self is a big part of the picture. I am in no way advocating violence of course..

The show also pointed out that without that power grid, unless you store all your money in a mattress, you'd have no access to cash from the bank. Unless of course you rob it! Even then, it wouldn't be of much use.
So the world would revert back to a barter system, until that doesn't work anymore.
It would be total chaos. I mean look at all the rioting in the past couple years. It would be a lot worse than that almost immediately.
Hope that day never comes!

Yep, we have to hope so. But I know that with modern warfare, the best way to attack a first world country would be by taking out their grid, or dropping an EMP. Like you said, all the money in banks is gone (you have no access short of robbing it), communication via phone or internet would be non-existent, it would literally be a nightmare.

And yes, like you said, there would be no shortage of violence.

No, you won't unless you have some hidey hole where you can be self sufficient without other folks around. And, you probably don't have enough fuel and running it only alerts those with evil intentions as to it's location when they are out shopping for a new generator.

I'm not trying to be the asshole here, but in an end of the world scenario, if you have stuff that other people want, you can damn well bet that people will kill you for it. Like you said, that generator only alerts them to the fact that you have something they want.

Fire up a barbecue when the power goes out and folks are cold and hungry. Same deal. There's more to living under austere conditions than one would suppose.

The other thing I'm constantly asking myself, is if we were in a horrible end of the world scenario (let's say a nuclear fallout), would I really still want to be alive?

It depends... If my wife and kids were still alive and well, then yes, I would fight like hell to stay alive to protect them. However, if they somehow died in the chaos, I think I'd be happier if I went with them.

Not to sound morbid or anything, but at that point when my family is gone and it's the end of the world... Well, you get the point.

Interesting stuff. My bet is the worlds population would take a tremendous nose dive within 90 days. How many people can live without certain medications? Type I diabetics for example, NEED insulin. They will die without it. Most of it needs to be kept cool. No electricity, no resupply. ................... Just one of many medical factors. I guess half of the worlds population and two generations of humans and it would again stabilize. Meanwhile don't eliminate all those coil and point powered vehicles. :qmeparto:

Check out a book called "One Second After" by William Forstchen. It's about a gentleman trying to save his girls and community in North Carolina after an EMP is detonated over the US taking out all electronics. It's a great story and he does a great job of trying to be realistic as possible to the challenges encountered by society after all electronics are wiped out.
