Recently bought this TJ and occasionally the fuel gauge drops to empty ... Would replacing the pump unit in the tank solve this problem? I haven't had any drivability issues.

That's a bad fuel sending unit, which is part of the fuel pump assembly.

That's likely caused by a bad connection in the gas gauge sender circuit. I'd start by reseating the electrical connector on the upper driver's side corner of the tank, as in disconnect the connector and reseat it a couple times. Could just be a dirty or corroded connector inside the plug assembly.
I'll fiddle with the connector tomorrow and see if that stops the issue ... I plan on taking the jeep to Utah next week and since I haven't had drivability issues I figure I'll be okay ... I've looked up how to replace the unit and it seems to be within my mechanical wheelhouse lol
Just be very (!) careful with all the plastic connectors, elbows, and holders/clips. They have become brittle by now and can break very easily.
