Can I use wheel adapters with different thread size?

I bought a pair of 5x4.5 to 5x5 adapters to fit 2016 Rubicon wheels on my Tj. I accidentally bought adapters that had a thread size of 12x1.5 instead of 1/2x20. Because the thread size is wrong the lugs that bolt the adapter to the wheel don't fit but I have lugs from another pair of spacers I could use. I would have to buy lugs to bolt the wheels to the adapters. Can I just buy the right size lugnuts and bolt them on or is that a bad idea.

So you want to press out the studs on the adapter (the ones that hold it to the wheel, not the hub) and press in new studs?

No, I was just wondering if I could use different lugnuts. The ones that came with the adapters that hold the adapter to the hub don't fit. Can I just use other lugs that are the right size? I would also have to buy new lugs to hold the wheel to the adapter because the studs on the adapter have a smaller thread size. This is probably a stupid question but I wasn't sure if it was ok.

You can use any nuts that fit the correct pitch of the thread you want. As long as you put 1/2" nuts on 1/2" threads and 12mm nuts on 12mm threads.
