Continued chirp on my 05 4.0

With it chirping on decelerating too I would look at the crank (harmonic) pulley being the gremlin. Any chance you can get some med-course sandpaper and break any glazing that may be on that pulley. Have you tried a different belt yet?

Thx Goatman, i have two belts I’ve been alternating while testing, both newish, gatorback belts, one that bypasses the AC pulley. Two weekends back I worked on the pulleys with some brake parts cleaner and a wire brush to clean the pulley, but I’ll give the sandpaper a try as well.

Pulled the belt and lightly sanded the smooth pulleys and have the grooves another good cleaning with a pick to get our anything I might have missed. I do have another non-ac belt I can try and plan to, Incase there is some issue with the two new Continental made Gator belts. 🤷🏻‍♂️

clutch fan question- should it be easier to spin by hand after a drive? I know if it free spins it could be bad. Mine seems just a stiff before and after a drive.

So last night I put on the old non-gator belt and went for a drive, still chirped. Because I was frustrated and had a can of belt dressing that said it was ok for Serpentine belts, I just put a small spray on it and let it dry. OMG, the noise. So that made things worse, the idler pulley was covered in rubber. So I pulled that which I thought I had replaced. Still was OEM and packed with dirt/mud from who knows when, and sounded bad when spun off the Jeep. Ran to AZ in my wife’s car and got a replacement. No change. 🤯. Still chirped. LOL.

So now I’m in full on stubborn throw parts at it mode! Clutch fan arrives today and if it gets here before 5p I’ll run over to my buddies shop for a hand putting it on. The belt dressing really makes me think it’s something causing the belt to rub, drag or a pulley to freeze momentarily

Ok, thinking its case closed on this one, but wanted to report back for future reference. The clutch fan was the culprit. I replaced the OEM (part reads Delphi Automotive USA) with the Hayden HD Clutch fan Part #2771 (Now made in Korea). My original clutch fan was extremely stiff, trying to rotate the fan blade would allow it to maybe move an inch or two, vs the new one once warmed up will do a revolution or two. My guess is the fan was locked up and coming down off of high RPMS it didn't want to let the water pump slow down with the rest of the pulley driven things. The new Hayden clutch i can even rotate the bearing on it before putting it on the Jeep, the old one takes a herculean effort to move.

One thing i did encounter after the change, i needed to notch my fan shroud a bit more since the fan was all of a sudden making contact with the shroud. Once that was corrected, took several road tests, cold starts, etc. For 2 days now the chirp has vanished.

So finally tally on my 05 LJR with 79k miles: New water pump, power steering pump, alternator, idler and tensioner pulleys and gatorback belt. Both pulleys had a bit of a gritty sound, along with the alternator. Only one that chaps my hide a bit is the power steering pump, but in the end not sure how i could have diagnosed the clutch fan any sooner?

Onward to the next repair! Cheers!
