New Jimmy from Suzuki

It’s more likely you can’t buy one because of meeting safety standards emissions etc (and no Suzuki dealers in US)
Sorry guys, google chicken tax, 1964.

The Ford Transit Van today is imported with seats so it comes in as a passenger vehicle, which they shred on arrival in the USA to sell it as a work van. The tax on import trucks goes back to Linden B Johnsons Presidency.

It is also why Subaru put rear seats into the Brats pickup bed in the 1980s.

But again, there's no Suzuki automotive dealers in the U.S. There used to be, but that was probably 10 years ago that they left.

So even if you could get these in the U.S., you really couldn't since there are no dealers here that sell Suzuki vehicles.

You also can't get a Renault in the U.S., a Peugeot, and countless numbers of other vehicles as well, including the plethora of diesels they offer overseas.

Yeah... Let's not forget those two important details. ;)

If tariffs were keeping out the Jimny they would be keeping out lots of other Japanese cars too.

I saw these all over the BVI when we spent 2 weeks there last summer running around drinking beer and rum and skin diving in our spare time. I wanted one badly, but found out they are not exported to the US for various reasons. Plus I think they only have around 80 hp in the previous generation. The 2018 models have about 100 hp.

Old thread bump - I saw a Jimny today. It looked alright, but I was surprised how small it was. I would have liked it a lot more if the top came off.

I owned a Suzuki SJ410 when I was stationed in Germany and then I had a Samurai for about 4 years in the 90's when they were still being sold here. Had a warmed up engine with 10:1 pistons, custom ground cam, Weber 32/38 carb, Doug Thorley Tri-Y header & Sidekick diffs w/5.13 gear with Lockrite lockers in both axles & a RockLobster t-case with 6.5:1 low range. Had a spring over lift & 33" tires. I look at them now and wonder how I ever fit inside that thing. But they are great little rigs and setup right can go a lot of places.

I owned 2 different Jimmy's in Japan. Both were packing 3 cylinders of turbo charged, intercooled fury. All 63hp worth lol. Loved those little things. The third gen JB's were the best by far IMHO. Spacious as hell for what they were. Jimny's will go damn near anywhere with very light mods. The new ones came out a few years ago right after I had already moved back here so I've never seen one in person, but they look great.

You can bring one in if you jump through some HOOPS. I had friends who brought back a German spec vehicle. I don't remember everything they had to do but it can be done.

Just needs to be 25 years or more old. That's it.
That's a "Jimney"... Jimmy was a Blazer equivalent SUV made by GMC.
I didn't notice that until now! Yup, JimNy.

I didn't know that was a requirement. But I never looked into it very much.

When Suzuki stopped selling the Samurai went to coils on all 4 corners like a TJ. I don't know exactly what the suspension is like but back then I would have loved to bring one over.

I used to go out wheeling with a guy that had an old Sammy. It had a rear locker and spring over lift on 31's, I was in my 99 Sahara(Jeep I owned at the time.), totally stock. And that Sammy ran circles around me. They are totally under rated.
