Replace them with 1/2 x 13 Grade 8 (or Grade 5 works too I believe) bolts. You can get them at any ACE Hardware, Home Depot, or Lowes.

Yes Grade 5 is fine, X2 on you needing 1/2x13 bolts. How did you break the bolts??? They don't need to be that tight to stay in place and hold the bumpers on. 77 ft-lbs. is the factory specified tightness if you have a torque wrench.

Jerry- I like your hat my wife is from Kauai and the Na Pali Coast is magnificent. We will be heading there for a few weeks but not on vacation. The in-laws need my help around the house.

I have stripped out the head of two of the bolts already so I stopped removing the old bumper. The new bumper (new to me) didn't come with bolts.
Please clarify the bolt size. 1/2 x 13 M5 or M8.
I don't know bolt sizing....
What is the 1/2?
What is the 13?
Which one is the length?
My bumper doesn't have tow hooks.

Thank you.

1/2" is the thread diameter. 13 is the thread pitch. 13 is course thread. They are not metric.

Do they still let folks kayak along the Na Pili coast and spend the night on the beach at half way?

Thanks for the info.
Do you know the length?

Yes, they allow kayak camping but only with a permit. The permit is to limit the impact to the area and to help with enforcement of squatters. Permits often have a long waitlist so if you are thinking about taking that adventure book FARRRRRR in advance.

The length will depend on whether you have the tow hooks or not. If no tow hooks then 1" to 1.5" should suffice.

I have a 2006 TJ/4.0 right-hand drive. Bought a new lightweight tubular bumper. Also bought a new super powerful Impact/Driver. So, after using PB several days in a row to loosen up the Torx bolts I proceeded to take them off. Still had to use an Allen wrench and a miniature sledge hammer to get them started. 3 top Torx came out clean and the other stripped. Left the two at the bottom for later. Question after all that ... what’s the difference between a #8 and a #5? Does it really make a difference ... or is one better than the other? Gracias.

grade 5 vs grade 8 refers to the strength of the bolt. For a 1/2" bolt, the grade 5 bolt would yield under a tension of about 16,000 pounds, and the grade 8 at about 25,000 pounds.

So, grade 5 would be fine if you didn’t have a winch, or hooks, on the front bumper. Nuts will have to be used as well?

I used Grade 8 because at my local hardware store the difference is a few cents so why not, but if Jerry says 5 is fine (up in post #3 in this thread), then it is.

the nuts are welded inside the frame, so you just need the bolts and washers.

I'm having a similar issue with my new to me 2004 TJ. The attachment bolts for the stock bumper were rusted into the welded nuts inside the frame and the heads twisted off leaving the threads in the nut. So far, I stopped at 2 of the 6 bolts. Penetrating oil did not touch it - have not yet tried the torch...

If the easy out does not work, I'm assuming I can drill all the way through and use a longer bolt through the bumper and frame.

Has anyone else had to do this? If so, any issues?
Thanks

Get the torch on those bolts before doing any more damage. Get the bolt HOT as in darned near red hot... that will break most any seized bolt loose.

2004 Jeep Wrangler X: OEM bumpers

I am a newbie to both jeeps and to this forum, so bear with me. I would like to take my current OEM stock bumpers off and repaint and reinstall. I am trying to find out what the total bolt and screw package would be on the front and rear OEM bumpers and end caps. I have looked numerous places (and have found the bolts, but not the size, length...Thanks in advance for your input.

To piggy back on this thread is there a reason the stock bolts shouldn’t be reused ?
If they look good and came out fine no reason not to re use them or should go grab 6 new one ?

Fine to reuse. General preference is hex bolt replacement over stock torx.

awesome, sometime these TTY bolts are junk after being used so wasn't sure if these are the same, mine are actually in good shape compared to the bumper. So may reuse if Lowe's doesn't have them, stinking ACE we had went out of business could always count on them for stuff like this.
