What speedometer gear do I need?

I have a stock 1997 wrangler se with 4.11 gears. And a manual. Stock tire size was 27.1. New is 31. I have seen multiple charts giving the tooth count, and one said 35, one said 37, and one said 38. I also see there are long and short gears. What do i need?

You need a 38 tooth gear for 31" tires and 4.11 gearing. The chart at http://www.4x4xplor.com/speedo.html is tested accurate.

All Wrangler transfer cases including our NP231 and NV231 are part-time. That simply means it's not suitable for full-time use like on the streets too. Fancier Jeeps like the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee have full-time 4x4 systems available at extra cost which means they can be driven in 4x4 on paved roads too like if they were slick from snow or ice.

As long as it's the short shaft gear. The longer shaft ones are for older cable driven speedometers.

I can't see that particular page, your link just takes me to their front page where it shows everything. But if it's for a 231 and Wrangler TJ it should work fine, our Wrangler TJs use just one model of 231 transfer case.
