Too easy to steer

I posted this a few weeks back but can't find where it went. My son's 1991 YJ 4.0 5SPD. 31X10.50X15 STOCK jEEP WHEELS. It is too easy to turn like something is not right. tires are good and balanced air pressure correct, all parts underneath old but tight. My son is starting to get worried about driving it. I believe the STEERING GEARBOX IS NEWISH but not sure. What can I look for?

@Fouledplugs may have some input on the YJ. I believe he has a couple.

Is it all stock? Or does he have a lift, aftermarket steering, drop pitman arm, etc?

bone stock other than 31's

Was the steering always like this, or did it happen after he put in the new steering gearbox?

It was like that when he bought it. The new steering box was already on also.

I don't know since I don't own a YJ, but maybe the steering is supposed to be that way?

If @Fouledplugs does indeed have a YJ, maybe he'll chime in to let us know how his steering is.

Hmmm, sounds like you might have to get the story straight.

But I do wonder if the steering is really to loose, or if maybe that's just how it's supposed to be.

is the steering of the jeep too easy to turn, like it's turning too quick..or is the steering wheel too easy to turn, like your just getting a lot of slop in the steering wheel itself before it actually turns the jeep?

...or is the toe in set incorrectly, as in it wants to dart wherever you start to point it?

I guess its hard to explain. The steering is responsive like it should be. No wandering at all. No slop in the steering.

A stock YJ should not be hard to turn. Ive never really thought about it that much when driving though. Not saying your concern is unwarranted.

I know I have never felt like it was harder or easiwr than any other vehicle. But it has been a while since driving a YJ on 31's. The only thing that can make sttering easier on a YJ or any vehicle would be due in fact to installation of some sort of hydro assist steering. It would be strange to have such a part like hydro assist on a Jeep on 31's.

If I am not mistaken caster and toe out of adjustment can be the culprit. But that's mainly TJ's. And usually is followed by slop in the steering or wondering around the lane.

Also have you tried dry steering? Having someone in the Jeep with the engine off and have them try to turn it back and fourth while you check for worn parts.

Please post pics and I can see about getting you a picture of my 1995 YJ steering since it's stock. Atleast I know the steering box is stock and still in the stock location. I can also get you pictures of my hydro assist setup and box on another YJ for comparison. May be a few weeks until I can get down to Alabama again.

Please post pics and I can see about getting you a picture of my 1995 YJ steering since it's stock. Atleast I know the steering box is stock and still in the stock location. May be a few weeks until I can get down to Alabama again.

Like I said it might be a while. Sorry for the delay. Sometimes it takes me time to setup a trip to Alabama. Here is one of my mostly stock YJ's that is collecting dust and battling the Alabama weather. It is a 1995 with stock box. Hope this helps.
