It has a "good tub" and barely any rust.

Yeah, I know exactly how you feel. I have been looking for another TJ for quite a while, I can't tell you how many i looked at that had "good" frames according to the postings. As I said in another post, I think about 1/2 of these people genuinely don't know that the frames are bad, and the other half are hoping you don't know what you're looking at. I finally accidentally found one that came up from Florida earlier this year and started making some nasty engine sounds. She is now sitting in my barn.

In the rust belt, you gotta look at a LOT of crap before you find one worth considering. Good luck!

a little expanding foam can fill that crack for ya. some window screen and bondo on the sides, sand and paint. it's just 1 trip up to the H depot.
don't forget the turtle wax.

I've seen similar done around here too. One had that Aluminum HVAC tape around the frame, painted black!!!

i drove 2hrs away to look at 1 in the middle of nowhere at a very high end dealership. i stopped counting patches when i got to 17 just on the driver side rear arch, every 1 nasty ol buger welds,
they said they'd have the mechanic get it ready for a test drive if i liked...........meaning he'd fill it up with oil since it was all on the ground under it.
it was listed as clean with new tires top and paint. by clean i guess they mean they washed it.

When I read your title, it reminded me of my old CJ days and looking for parts. I had a '67 CJ5 and I always needed Tranny parts and front and rear ends. Farmers in SW Pennsylvania would have old CJs rusting away in their fields and they either wouldn't sell them or wanted way too much for them and they would tell me "I know what I got" OR "doesn't cost me anything to leave it there because I don't need to feed it". 30 years later when I go home to visit, some of those old Jeeps are still parked in those fields completely rotted away.

There was a few who sold them to me or just gave me the vehicles for free, I just had to get them out of their field. Unfortunately they were all the hurricane four cylinder models with the T90 tranny and the 5:38:1 gear ratio in the axles and I would blow through them with my Dauntless V6 (actually just my poor teenage driving ability). With 5.38:1 gears in the axles, I could start off in 3rd gear in high range. Sorry for the sidetracked post, but your title brought back some good memories!!

The dutch contingent is strong here in West Michigan. On the plus side, a lot of them take care of their stuff VERY well. On the negative, they expect you to PAY for that care...and jack the price about 20% over normal. Its crazy. I used to know a used boat dealer pretty well. He had me on retainer to look for boats for him, since living where I do, we have a lot of boats that only see fresh water, but are decently sized (lots of 20-25 foot trailer boats). I never did find one for him, because everyone wanted too much for their "well cared for, clean, little used" boat. Just like your experience, these people generally were paying cash and it wasn't costing them anything to let the boat rot away unused on the trailer...but you couldn't buy it from them without paying a premium because "I know what I got!"

It got very frustrating...
