What did you do to / in your garage / shop today?

Broke out the plasma cutter over the weekend. Had a lot of repetitive parts to cut and the cut off wheel and grinder was a bit much. It is just a cheaper Yes Welder that I got a few years ago when they first came out. I don’t use it a lot but it works well every time I use it. It’s capable of...

What did you do to your TJ today?

This is good information to have although a little puzzling. When my stock Rubicon rear locker failed I replaced it with an Eaton e locker, very happy with it. I reused the stock ring and pinion, put on 5k miles or so and then regeared to 4.88 with a Revolution gear set. Into that about 2500...

    Jerry can swing arm holders

So those carriers look interesting, I’m not sure I would want them up that high though. I made this bumper/ swing out carrier, it is only one can however and with the spare (33”) it pretty much takes up all the real estate between the lights. I like it but it is heavy but I need the extra fuel...

What did you do to your TJ today?

Optical illusion, the rear still has the stock Rubicon flares and the front is the aftermarket flat flares, can’t remember the manufacturer at the moment. The tires are Mickey Thompson M/T’s.

What did you do to your TJ today?

Drove it to work, first time since the regear, what a difference! Went from 4:10 to 4:88 on 33’s with the 5 speed. Also replaced the ball joints and upper control arm bushings. Took apart all the control arm Johnny joints and greased them as well. Really tightened up the steering, it was a...

    Gear Pattern Check

Just to wrap this up, I do not have the shims to reduce .001 so I will run this. I am happy with the backlash and the preload so hopefully a good balance. Now to get it all back together and start breaking them in. I have other maintenance to do, like getting the Johnny joints taken apart and...

    Gear Pattern Check

Great, I will check what I have for shims after work and see what I can do. As always, appreciate your help!

    Gear Pattern Check

I added the 3 thou and was able to run a quick pattern before work this morning. I was beginning to question my backlash because it wasn’t changing that much with my pinion adjustments. But I measured it in 3 places around the ring gear and it ranged from.0075 to almost.009 so it is what it is...

    Gear Pattern Check

Now doing the rear axle on my 2004 Rubicon. 4.88 Revolution gears. I am not stating it but I check the rotational resistance every time to insure it is in spec. Learned that from the front axle. This is the best pattern so far, maybe just a touch deep? Backlash is 8 thou. I really appreciate all...

What did you do to / in your garage / shop today?

Finally the front axle is leaving the shop and going back under the Jeep. Re-geared to 4.88, control arm bushings replaced, new ball joints, braced up ds control arm mount, new unit bearings. Complete with ghetto paint job, lol! On to the rear axle, hopefully I learned something from this one so...

    Gear Set Up Check

Awesome! I think I will run with it. I still need to set the pinion preload plus all the other stuff to button it up. I learned a lot about the process that's for sure, which will help when I get to the rear axle. Still have to do UCA bushings and ball joints on this one. Anyway, could not have...
