    Rear Main Seal Replacement (4.0)

Buttoned up the motor today. That was a involved job..... Sadly still leaking some when parked. Doesn’t look bad but it was also masking a auto trans leak. Pulling it next

    Rear Main Seal Replacement (4.0)

Finally got it out! Also was able to get the new seal in, torqued the main cap, and put back in the main bearing support. Tonight it’s clean the oil pan and block area and install it. Have to get a new starter and battery terminal. The bolt for the 12v connection on the starter was frozen so I...

    Rear Main Seal Replacement (4.0)

I really wanted to have a shop do this. Sadly I think this motor is ending near end of life so I thought I would try. It has a knock and I see part of the piston skirt in the oil pan. I’m hoping to finish this job then see how long it lasts while I save for a new motor haha

    Rear Main Seal Replacement (4.0)

Cap is off. I can see the upper seal part. Hitting it with a round punch is not moving it

    Rear Main Seal Replacement (4.0)

I had all the bolts bolts out. The whole pan dropped but I could see the rear of the oil pan sitting on the inspection cover tab. Thanks for the information I will take off the starter today.

    Rear Main Seal Replacement (4.0)

Doing my seal now. Struggling to get the oil pan off. Looks like there is a tab sticking out on the trans inspection cover that is preventing the back of the oil pan from dropping. Any tips? Debating yanking the starter and inspection plate but thought I would check on here first.

I used Jeep Slop Shop for some work and they seem like honest guys. Probably going to have them replace my motor soon

    Ice chest vs. TJ

I keep a yeti 45 in my land cruiser in Texas heat. I can go about 5 days and the water is cold! I normally add ice on the 5th day draining some water. It lives in my land cruiser and always amazes me. I have had rtic’s but the yeti’s just seem to do better

My TJ is rusted out and has a bad motor: Should I move on?

Thanks everyone for the words. I think I am going to drop in a new motor, paint the frame, and do a body lift (maybe do a 3” lift too). I think it will get me by for a while and in the future look for a frame.

My TJ is rusted out and has a bad motor: Should I move on?

The #5 cylinder is knocking. It has a bad main oil seal leak and blow by. I’m assuming the knock is from the PO letting the oil get low. When driving it has a smoke coming out and you can see oil on the underside coming out. I don’t feel like taking it apart as there are no good rebuilders...

My TJ is rusted out and has a bad motor: Should I move on?

I honestly don’t mind changing the motor. Also the rust on the tub looks minor so I would probably leave it. I was thinking of replacing the motor, painting the frame with por or hammerite (I wasn’t super happy with por on my 53 f100 I used), replacing the cups, and do a lift. Just making sure...
