I just did a gear change. All new bearings and seals. I'm tightening the pinion nut and it just doesnt seem right. I have a 4 foot breaker bar on and a pipe wrench and I'm cranking this thing down as hard as I can and it still seems loose. Should I keep cranking this thing down? I feel like...

I think you just nailed it. Yes I'm going from the factory gear to a 4.88. Didn't realize I needed new carrier. Well I guess I'm buying a Truetrac earlier than I planned.

I know the first question is going to be where are you placing your pinion shims. Look at the video I linked below, fast forward to 26:30. Thats where I placed my shims.

That seems crazy to me! And thats a very expensive bearing puller! What's the risk of just placing the shims outside the bearing? Every single tutorial I look at has the shims outside the bearings.

I'm re-gearing my Dana 30 right now. When I pulled the diff out the shims were located under the bearings. I'm assuming that when I reinstall this I should just relocate the shims to the outside of the bearings correct? Chances are good that I will need to adjust the shims and I cant be...
