Jeep Shuddering Under Load in 2H, not in 4H

To me it sounds like pinion angle. One easy thing you can do to help verify that is add or remove a lot of weight to the back of the Jeep, enough to raise it or sag it visibly. This may or may not be easier than just adjusting control arms... but I don't have a lift and I live in the rust belt...

How does the 42RLE fair going over mountain passes and long hills?

I wasn't aware the weight difference was so minimal. I have witnessed 4-cyl Jeeps do amazing things, things heavier rigs could not. One of the best wheelers I know drives a 4-cyl YJ. He stripped everything unecessary out of to reduce weight, so we aren't talking about engine weight differences...

How does the 42RLE fair going over mountain passes and long hills?

I think this is like comparing a red golf cart to a blue one. They're all slow. The only big advantage I hear about (and have seen) consistently with the 2.5L, other than the price, is the weight savings. So it's possible it's a bit faster off the line due to that, I dunno. I do feel it helps...

How does the 42RLE fair going over mountain passes and long hills?

Yes, this is what I meant. Not sure why I typed 2.4L. To be honest I wasn't even aware of the switch from the 2.5L to the 2.4L until just now. I may have put all the 4-cyl anecdotes in the same box in my mind but that box is full of stories of the 4 cyl (probably usually the 2.5L) going 200k+ mi...

How does the 42RLE fair going over mountain passes and long hills?

I have to agree with the others... a Jeep is one of the worst choices I can think of for a college kid. It's not so much that they are so unreliable, but the market is flooded with rust buckets, abused and neglected rigs, etc, and the good ones cost a small fortune. My recommendation if she has...

How does the 42RLE fair going over mountain passes and long hills?

If she needs space and doesn't care about going topless then I'd tell her to stick with the Yotas (if that's your reason for thinking Cherokee). Obviously we love Jeeps here, and obviously we really love TJs. But she better not need cargo capacity! If she wants in on that wonderful topless...

    Help with Gears and Lockers

For what you describe you'll be well served with just a front lunchbox. If it's no rocks, light to moderate wheeling, trails and sand, a front lunchbox and open rear should get you everywhere you want to go and then some - that would be my recommendation if you stick with the 35. And for 33's, I...

Is the factory TJ frame electrically grounded to the body?

I've had success grounding CB antennas to the tub (antenna mounted above driver tail light). Of course you need to tune it with a SWR meter. I've done this on two TJs and tested a mile apart (straight line, with trees and buildings in between). I remember thinking it would be better if I...

Any good alternatives to Pro Comp 2 inch lift springs?

I have the 2" BDS springs and a 4.0L. I had to add spacers to fix the rake, but I also have a winch with steel rope up front. I think the 2" would be fine for you. Better to get 2" and need to add a cheap spacer to adjust for rake than to get 2.5" and have a Jeep that won't stop stargazing.

    Chinese Antirock

Yup. The disposable culture is terrible, and the thinking has become baseline. It's employed for far more than just consumerism now. But that's another topic entirely. I don't know how we get away from it. The consumer loves it (cheaper products, new products, dopamine hits each time), and the...

Are JKs more capable than TJs?

I haven't driven the 6spd TJ. Mine is the 5spd, which has its quirks but is really satisfying to drive. I would however echo these statements about the JK's manual. "Mush" is the perfect way to describe it. It's like talking to someone through a wall vs talking to them face-to-face. In the TJ I...

Are JKs more capable than TJs?

It is absolutely soulless and I hated it until I started double clutching it. Doing that, it's butter smooth. I mean BUTTER smooth, smoother by far than any automatic I've ever been in. There's an enjoyment to that for me. But it's still soulless and I still hate the clutch feel, throttle...

Are JKs more capable than TJs?

My Mom has a 3.6L JKU 6 spd. I like the oomph of the motor when you rev it up but I don't like the way the throttle, clutch, or shifter feels. The clutch is super light and has no feedback. The throttle has a big delay from the moment you press it to the moment the motor actually responds, and...

    MML without body lift

My understanding is that raising the motor raises the front of the transmission, which lowers the rear of the transfer case. That's why a MML reduces the pinion angle relative to the transfer case, which is the improvement in driveline angle people refer to.

Are JKs more capable than TJs?

It is extremely scenario dependent, but generally a short wheelbase vehicle requires less tire than a long wheelbase vehicle, typically because of the difference in breakover angle. This is why Gladiators are capable on 37's, but struggle on 33's, whereas a TJ on 33s is extremely capable. A...
