The hose connects inside and outside the diff... so yes you will need to remove the cover. Both of mine were rusted badly and broke while removing them. Paint them on the outside after installing to prevent rusting out again.- PaulR

I sacrificed a cheap quarter inch drive socket. I used an air die grinder to cut a slot the width of the fitting.- PaulR
