I still have mine but I'm not as old as some of you so I'm cheating, not to mention that I'm ashamed to say it's sitting on a parking since a few years. It's a 1988 VW T3 that I bought in 2008, at that time the main reason for getting my driving license was being able to go riding my pitbikes and camping with my friends so my first car had to be a van. I always liked the old split-window T1 but even back then they were crazy expensive. However I found this T3 with low mileage and a fresh paint for 5k, here is a pic of the first trip I made with it
It was running well but exhibited boat-like road handling characteristics. Driving on the freeway on a windy day was a scary ride to say the least. So I upgraded some parts, at that time I was working as an apprentice in a MX shop and I wanted to do everything by myself, I made some custom spacers in the workshop and had to modify the U hinge otherwise the sliding door would hit the much wider 17" rims that I fitted. I remember having used an old CRF50 fork tube to extend it, it was my first attempt at welding something useful and it turned out good. The wider low profile tires along with some Bilstein shocks and shorter H&R springs made 3 worlds of difference in terms of road handling and with some minor cosmetics changes it was looking great.
It ran great for some years, I used it as a daily, for work, I also had to help all my local friends with their movings ( something I didn't anticipated but it wasn't easy to be the only bus owner

). And I have great memories of trips to various cool places. I had to replace the water pump, the starter, a few ball joints and other minor stuff but nothing too bad and I felt like it was rewarding to drive something I was repairing by myself. Later I found a set of nice 3-part Rial 18" wheels for the price of the included tires, I had to get them.
Unfortunately it started to have random loss of power. After shutting off the engine and waiting for a few seconds it was running good again for a few miles until the next loss of power. I spent some month trying to troubleshoot the problem without success. I ended up showing it to a mechanic who wasn't able to find the issue, all we know is that it's in the injection system. I tried to find a complete one from a similar van for some time without success and then I had other priorities and another daily driver so I procrastinated, but this thread reminds me that I need to put it back on the road ASAP!
