I know this is a dead thread, but it is what I was going to post so anyway - I am an addict, I understand and occasionally embrace this part of my personality. My Tacoma cost 7k used, and I dropped 10k in mods the first 3 months. It is not done, mostly done, but still needs at least 4k (new paint job, new leafs - then mostly done. I made a few mistakes witih the donor vehicle - it will never be perfect. Honestly it can't be perfect - it is a Tacoma. OK, it was a stripped 4cly Tacoma.
I don't want to really admit what I was willing to spend for a LJ with a crappy 4" lift - but the PO did do enough that it does not have any noticeable lift problems and whatever rust has been well hidden - no other high profile mechanical problems yet. Lets just say it is starting off more than what I have in my Tacoma. I have had it 8 days, and I am probably at 3k so far - abet alot of that is on back orders that will be lucky to arrive before the end of summer (bumper is going to take forever, winch and flat tow bar can not be done before the bumper). I keep finding rabbit holes. I really want an ultimate roof rack (part of the reason I started this adventure) - that by itself might top 7k (have not started down that hole yet). Found overdrive for the first time today - my gearing is that bad. But you can't just do gears, you need to do lockers, and axles and... Ok, 2k for gears, another 3k for lockers, plus whatever axles cost - that will cost more than the roof rack before it is done. Plus tires and rims (2k), Plus a tire carrier before I destroy the rear of the tub (1.5k).
Guess I will call the 4wheel shop and see what the regearing and all will cost tomorrow - regearing is beyond my wrenching capacity. At least I can probably get that done while I am waiting on the bumpers, roof, and rack (don't think I can even start on the rack before I deal with the roof).
I have barely started this and I can see my jeep being not much less expensive than my wife's stock Rubicon JLU's MSRP- well that is not entirely true, she did not like the first JLU, so we are on the second Ribocpm JLU and we don't want to think of what we "sold" the first one for... The first one was seller financed and the buyer is driving it for free right now-I kind of knew that was going to happen, but that is what happens when you sell to family.
What is the correct name for Jeep disease?
