Well, it looks like I’m going to need a new muffler soon. The rest of my exhaust is in great shape but I’m wondering what’s the best new muffler to buy that’s not crazy in price?
Is a stock replacement one fine or is there one that’s a bit better in sound and performance?

Thanks

I used the quadratec brand on mine, stainless cat back. Not a bad price and it’s actually a magnaflow make. Good sound and not too loud but sounds like it has a pair. My buddy has a similar one in his 95 yj, but he got the “off road “ version so it ends before the axle, not a rear tailpipe. His is very loud in the jeep, so maybe that type is not for everyone

When I switched out my exhaust, I went with the Banks Monster exhaust.... not for hp gains or anything like that, don't believe the hype in that arena... it won't do anything as the stock one is pretty much free flow!

As for sound though, it made a big difference. It's pretty quiet at constant speeds (excluding the interstate as rpms are pretty high), but it sounds very aggressive on acceleration. It's a little louder overall but mostly just a deeper sound.

at around $200 on amazon, it's a pretty cheap upgrade!

I am using a T304 stainless Flowmaster Super HP-2

Don't buy a muffler from an internet website, buy & have it installed locally by one of your local independent muffler shops. There are lots of benefits by buying locally... no waiting on UPS, no need to ship anything back by UPS if you don't like what you received, and if you don't like the sound of one you had installed locally, they can swap to a different muffler as my local muffler shop did at no extra charge.

By 'independent muffler shop' I mean avoid the muffler chains like Midas and Meineke that have sales quotas to fill that typically charge 2X what a small independent shop can charge.

Both ways work, just in different circumstances.
Like Jerry said, if you don't know what tone you like and/or don't have the means to install it, go to a shop.
In my case, I knew from hearing a couple other TJs with banks pipes that I liked the tone and knew I could do it myself, so I had no problem pulling the trigger on one from the internet. Either way works just fine!

I used a Magnaflow on my LJ, and I like the sound of it. Doesn’t drone at interstate speeds but sounds good if I get into it some. My Son’s XJ has a Flowmaster Super 44. It’s loud’ish, but he loves it. My wife however can’t stand it. ;)

I will be replaying mine with a thirty two dollar Cherry Bomb. I have no idea how it will turn out, but I'll post the results. My current one has broken baffles that rattle to beat the band. Sounds like Gene Krupa's ghost is in my exhaust.

For those with the Banks, how does that work with the inlet outlet not being offset? It looks like that'd be a requirement so the upper control arm mount doesn't hit the exhaust.

on my TJ I did a complete magnaflow stainless set up from the exhaust manifold on back..and love how it's not too loud, and doesn't drone at speed

on my 2.5L YJ, I did more of a budget system from quadratec, it's a bit more throaty around town, but it's also a bit buzzy at highway speeds...not that the 4cyl is capable of highway speed very often or very long

these were both done over 5 years ago, the YJ was closer to ten, so things may have changed
