Hi All,

I have read thread after thread on here and know (and believe) Twill is the best material. It $ wasn't a concern, I would have already had it ordered. What I am struggling with is a local guy has a Supertop NX in black diamond that he said he used for like a week and then just went with a bikini top that I can get for $550 versus a new Twill will now be $1750 w tax. That is quite a difference in cost.

Is the twill really worth $1200 diff in this case? If it was my only top, I would say yes, for sure, but right now we have a hard top.

I have an 05 TJ, black, with a hard top that we will keep on during winter. I want a soft top during good weather months and hope to have windows down, sunrider back more times than not. I do love the Twill is darker color blk and all around better for sound and heat, etc.

For those that have a twill, how does the noise compare to hard top? I read one post that said it was quieter than hard top??

Just trying to justify the extra $1200 for the Twill even though my gut says just get it :)

Thanks!!

I personally would choose the standard Sailcloth fabric over twill whose looks appear to be more easily damaged. Sailcloth is what comes on new Wranglers.

I have the fancy twill on my JK. I just replaced the fabric on my TJ with Denim, as it is a '99 and everything else, to include the paint is faded, so I didn't want the very black of the black diamond, but the more grey of the denim.

Having had the twill for a few years now, I can 100% tell you it is by far the best of the options. I would guess it is the more durable of the three, it certainly feels the best, and it is the thickest.

That being said, I have that top because I found it on craigslist for super cheap. While it is by far the best, and probably going to out last the vehicle, I can't justify it on the TJ for the price they want for it.

I have the OEM version of the Supertop NX, so I believe that makes it sail cloth. It's my only top and I have no complaints. Excellent quality, fits great and it's actually quieter than my buddy's JL with hard top. For a top I was only going to use half the year; especially with the sunrider open and/or windows out, as you described, I'd grab the one for $550. Even if the twill were a tad bit nicer, that's $1,200 you could spend on other TJ mods....or rather... necessities ;)

If you’ll be switching between the soft top and hard top, get the $550 one. $1700 is ridiculous to use only part time or even full time IMHO. I bought a twill Trektop nx and I concur it’s better than the other materials. But I “only” paid $750 for it.

Spend the money. I uave the cheaper option and after about 4 summers of use it leaked like i cant even describe. It was pouring inside my jeep. I emailed bestop and they said nothing they could do about it. I took it to a local boat top guy and he said i needed to use sealer on the seams. He also said driving it with it openand this type of material was NOT good for high speeds. A 30mph boat, sure. Since i have done the sealer it doesnt leak that i know of. If i knew what i knew now, id have spent the money on the higher end materials.

Sounds like "user error". Mine was still perfect after 5 years. If you contacted Bestop during the warranty period, they would have sent you a new one. The local boat top guy doesn't know what he's talking about. 🤫

The boat top guy has been doing them for 40 years. Ill believe him over some people on the internet. I called bestop and they had me send pictures. There were no physical holes so they wouldnt warranty it. Id love to know what the "user error" might be. It was installed property on a garage kept vehicle. Anytime i drove i opened it up because thats what you have a soft top for. The water was pouring in from the middle seam where the speakers are and the back seam where the support bar goes inside the sleeve of the top. Since i did what the boat guy told me to do, it hasnt leaked.

One of my side panels the zipper broke a few years ago and had zero issues getting that replaced by bestop. They were very quick about that.

Huh? Mine has no seam mid way above the speakers, only a velco piece to secure it to the mid support bar. That said, I bought the Twill before the price hike and couldn't be happier with it. Fit, looks and sound suppresion, it has it all in spades.

The twill is the better material. The black diamond i believe is the cheaper one, thats what i have. Theres a seam there on the inside and outside, its very fine. The rear seam is very easy to spot. Next time ill splurge for the twill or sailcloth. This one has also faded a bit grey in the sun.

First of all if you have a hard doors it doesn’t matter but some of the half door options not come in twill so you don’t get a consistent look which matters to some

The twill is impressive but to me it looks like wearing a tuxedo with work boots on a TJ-

The sail cloth the Jerry recommended is just a great all-around material- I feel like it is a good value-

Bestop will typically make up about anything if you’ll send a video to them... There are some good stories of their service on here.

@SamwiseGamJeep Needs to chime in - he has twill and has worked through some things with them recently

Yessir, great customer service, bar-none the best.
I went with twill, based on much research, lots of recommendations, and lifetime warranty on the twill.
Down side is they do not make door skins, or even the upper sliders in twill for our tjs.
Yet. There are requests for both with them.
Steve in customer service with bestop is fantastic, helpful with any issues I've had.
I do not have a problem with the contrast between the twill top, and the uppers in black diamond.
Would like it better if it matched perfectly, but My jeep has many shade and texture variations of black, I'm good with it.
Plus still get tons of compliments.
The twill is thick, quality, warmer, cooler, quieter, and lifetime warranty.
Worth the extra coin to me.
Twill is the bomb.

And just for the record I’ve got a lot of stuff on this guy- We could put each other away for years.... So we’re careful what we say🤣🤣🤣🤣

I think it depends on how you use your Jeep. Mall crawler, mostly street, you can't beat the look, if looks are high on your list. I had my 1ST one on for barely a month, and the header bar warped. Bestop took care of that issue quickly! A few weeks later the replacement did the same thing. Yup, I was just thrilled. To my complete surprise, when I called, they sent me another whole new top! (bows, hardware, top and windows) If you look you'll see a lot of others have had issues with the header bar. Instructions could be a lot better, as usual, but not horrible(UTUBE is your friend too) Hardware assembly is easy, but getting that top on the first time is a bear, even for two and worried about messing up your $1700 top. It does loosen up as time goes by, so it does get easier. I live in the desert so I can't comment on leaks, but not one drip from some serious washings. The material cleans up very nice and dries quickly(so does everything else in the desert). If I had to drive freeway/highways everyday I'd go nuts from all the flapping etc., in town it's great, SEEMS to hold the cold/heat better. For me the "arch bar" isn't useful (no snow /seldom to never rains) it slaps against the top at anything over 40, I took it out. But the twill is quieter than a buddy's sailcloth.
I haven't had the top long enough for any comment on longevity, BUT I'm glad I bought mine direct from Bestop(didn't want a middleman)
They have been more than helpful with questions, etc...and you can't beat the warranty.
Overall I'm very happy with the top, time will tell.

Btw @AndyG , I believe in my research when deciding which material to get, the "Sailcloth" is no longer an option. Its either vinyl in a black denim or black diamond pattern, or Twill. Another reason why Twills the better choice.

Sailcloth and black diamond are interchangeable terms I believe, or thought anyway

The black denim is a little slicker- my trektop had it

Anything other than Twill, is just a little better than a tarp, so if your not sporting a Twill top, it's just a matter of time before it blows apart..🤣🤣🤣Twill is the new booshy "It" group. May not have a Rubicon, but we have Twill tops.

Black demin is what they used on 97-99' Jeeps. It's thinner and more gray looking than black diamond sailcloth. As of 2000', every factory top was sailcloth.
