2004 with a 42RLE and the interlock button on the shifter is sticking ofen not allowing the shifter to move out of park. Sometimes the button is difficult to press but it works and sometimes the button is locked up hard. At first I assumed the crappy plastic rod was broken so I pulled the handle prepared to do the chopstick fix but that doesn't seem to be the problem because the white plastic rod won't come out so appears to be intact.

Any ideas on what to check next?

That the white plastic rod won't come out makes me think it might be busted and jammed in there from being pushed down by the button.

That was my thought too but I leaned into it pretty hard trying to remove it. I'll try again. Last thing I want to do is damage it then it will be a real mess.

I'll leave the inappropriate jokes to @Jerry Bransford

I finally took a picture with the handle off. No idea how far up it is supposed to protrude so if somebody can take a look at theirs to compare I'd really appreciate it.

Sorry for the really shitty picture but my garage was about 105 degrees. It appears our shifter sticks are protruding about the same distance. This is my carved plastic coat hanger stick.
