Angry sparrows?

Got myself a cricket sound while driving. Sound is coming from the t-case areas.

I've already replaced:
-entire steering system and tie rod ends
-1 out of 4 u-joints
-suspension

I was told that it may be my throwout bearing and I should redo my clutch. After reading into the angry sparrows on here I'm starting to think otherwise.

Anyone want to save me an unnecessary clutch job?

check the front driveshaft. unbolt it from the axle and tie it up and out of the way and go for a short cruise. if no sparrows then you know it's the front driveshaft. you might not even need to take it for a cruise if you hear the chirp when moving the shaft around.

my sparrows ended up being the centering ball for my rear tw shaft.. not sure if you have a rubi or not but it could be the rear as well if you have a dc shaft.

denny's driveshafts sells rebuild kits that have everything you need. i changed mine out on saturday, took a few hours with only a balljoint press and some snap ring pliers.

05 LJ. No Rubi. You can drive without a driveshaft?

front or rear out sure, just not both

front out you can drive around as usual, rear out you have to be in 4hi but you have to remember that both front wheels are getting power so turning is clunky

Thanks. Can't be a coincidence that a shop just sprayed a bunch of weatherproofing gunk on my "frame" and my sparrows appeared. Maybe I just need a solid lubing.

So I have crickets without the driveshaft turning, ie parked. Signs pointing to clutch throw out bearing

A bad throwout bearing will only make noise while you're stepping down on the clutch pedal. Check the idler pulley for the serpentine belt.

The roller bearings inside the TOB don't spin unless the clutch pedal is being held down so it's unlikely to be the source of the noise.

actually we just had my brothers 06 rubi 6 speed do exactly the opposite . as soon as you put pressure on the pedal it would shut up ! we did a complete clutch job and it fixed it. It had a recently replaced plastic throwout bearing in it.

That's certainly an odd thing because the bearings inside the TOB don't actually spin when the clutch pedal is up. The bearings only spin when it's holding the clutch disk away from/up & off of the flywheel.

not going to say 100% it was the TOB, but it felt gritty when spun by hand. we replaced everything with a LUK kit including the pilot bearing....It's all quiet now !
