I've got this set of half doors and plan on fixing them up for my Jeep. The interior panels appear to originally have been gray, but someone painted them black. The black is scratched and slight peeling in some places. I want to paint them a color as close as I can get to the khaki interior I have.

My question is what is the best way to remove the black? I'm worried that some kind of paint stripper would be to harsh for the plastic. Also worried that sanding will not get all the black off and it might peel sometime down the road after I've painted it the color I want.

What's the best way to get most of the black paint off?

Maybe hit them with a sandblast with light media? Ive sandblasted alot of plastics just for a clean etch.

If it were me, i'd clean them really well and run a light scuff pad on them.. I think the gray 3M is the lighter one. I'd avoid anything harsh that will run the risk of 'sanding' down the texture. Dry well and evaluate whether the remaining paint on there will lift off or not. If it looks pretty solid, i'd put an adhesion promoter over it and respray in the new color. In other words, you may not need to necessarily remove the current black paint completely.

Dawn Dish Soap... Wax & Grease remover... Adhesion Promoter... Paint

Those are my doors! Haha - Same issue and goals here. Anything you learned during your project that might help me? I just started today.

Do a test area with GO-JO handcleaner - then a stiff brush -

May take it 1-2 hours or overnight but it will be worth trying, then hot water and dawn, then alcohol, then scuff, adhesion promoter and repaint.

Also any “waterborne” or “green” non MEK paint remover is a safer alternative for the plastic than the older type-

Even an orange based handcleaner works well- remember It is sold in a plastic bottle-

Also thin plastic laid over them will capture the solvents and speed up the process.

Once you get it to soften you might consider an electric light duty pressure washer.

Very interested in your results. My interior is Camel, I think , and some moron painted the passenger side door panel black and yellow. Just the one door panel.
