Never Again - Vinyl Wrap

If you tear it off in chunks you could just say it's camo, at least for a while.

Wraps are a short term solution, nothing more. I see it all the time with people buying cars they sit on for 6-12 months at a time and don't care for anyway.

Why would anyone cover a nice white Jeep with silver, just like a zillion other Jeeps? I wish I could peel mine and get white.

Eh, maybe it's just the age but from the OPs photo it looks kinda matte and pretty cool. But both silver and white are probably my least favorite vehicle colors because of how common they are.

A little off topic but I saw a YT video the other day talking about how car paint colors reflected the optimism of the times. Periods like the great depression, the oil crisis of the 70s tended to have a lot of black, white, silver while the post war 50s and 60s, and the 90s had brighter colors. Then since around 2000 people just got too obsessed with resale value and now they want to buy neutral colors that will be easy to sell, and car makers are happy to provide that.

Well, I called around and talked to a few of the vinyl wrap shops in town and asked about getting them to finish up this job for me, but they really don’t want to unless they are putting a new wrap on it. So I started thinking and I might just get a funky color on mine, one that helps this jeep be unique and also will protect it from redneck pinstripes.

That is on my list of first things to do. Not a fan of the “look at me” hi lift jack on the hood. If you are actually wheeling a lot I can see it being a good spot up high and accessible if you are on your bumper or whatever, but I am not going to be wheeling a lot, or intensely…at lease I am telling myself that. I did buy a used jeep so I wouldn’t have the “I am not going out there with my 60K jeep to mess it all up”.

I'm really glad that when I bought my Jeep, I opted for silver. I had no way of knowing at the time, but bright silver metallic is actually a decent match for the raw aluminum fenders that would eventually find their way onto my Jeep.

I will say I like the way metallics bring out the body lines in a way they just don't show with a one dimensional paint.

maybe shoulda just lef t it on and like here get the darkest window tint you can get.
Then when that goes south will match the wrap.

And the yankee tan.

I have my own wrapping business.

I would ditch the steamer and use a heat gun. In my experience a steamer is faster taking the vinyl off, but it will cause the adhesive to separate from the vinyl leaving more glue behind. Glue is worse than vinyl to remove.

Use a decent heat gun, if it was a quality wrap media it should come off pretty quick without leaving a ton of glue behind.

Who ever did the wrap did it the right way pulling parts… done right, but will take more effort to remove.

It does look like the wrap is lifting near the cowl on that hard body line.

Pray to god he didn’t use 3M primer 94, it’s an adhesion promoter used before you lay down the wrap on tricky body lines. Makes the vinyl very hard to get off.

A quality wrap media should leave very little glue behind, but you will have some. I would try and get a quality adhesive remover. I use Rapid Remover, which might be hard to find. If you got to an auto body supply house they will typically have a good remover.

Any other questions fire away.

I see you’re in Michigan… we have family there but currently residing in Virginia… I’m about to order my first ever Jeep and sadly, I’m just not in love with the 2024 color options. Do you mind chatting about wrap costs and such? I’m super interested in wraps and certainly don’t mind a road trip “home” to have you do it for me!

Most recent thread a search brought up on the wrap topic so dredging it up.

I'm considering this kryptic camo as a wrap. It would cover the pinstriped black and match my ruff-tuff kryptic camo seat covers.
Yuk or yup?

Makes it look like a four door JK!

I like solid colors and as long as it's not rusting then whatever paint is on it is fine.

Ultimately it's your Jeep. If you love it, then perfect...send it!
