Savvy MML, these extenders are supposed to fit in this larger hole aren’t they??

Yep. Probably more to do with sourcing the little extenders than the machining. You have two options, put the threaded end of the extenders in a drill and with some sandpaper, sand them down with the drill on a slow speed until they fit. Or, grab a drill bit and clearance out the hole a little.
 
I had to do the same thing recently. It was surprising how much metal I had to remove when drilling to get them to fit. I expected just a smidge, because they almost fit originally. Maybe sanding the extenders would be easier.

You may also have to cut/grind off some metal from the block which goes on the passenger side. Here's mine.
