Shifter problem?

A few weeks ago I stripped out the interior and replaced a bunch of stuff, including the torn upper and lower boots on my shifter. Now it pops out of second if I don't hold it down. Yes, the new boots are stiff but I'm think my old shifter might just be worn out and I'm hoping it's not a transmission issue. Ideas?
(Obviously I know diddly about the inner workings of an AX 15)

Stiffer boots, perhaps mixed with a tcase drop and/or a body lift. The possible tcase drop and/or body lift weren't enough to cause the shifter problem before but are now together with the stiffer boots.

Factory suspension. Ol' Jackass is just a trailer pulling, gravel/ dirt road runner. It's fine in fourth so...? It's not a big deal because how long is anyone in second? :) but if i can fix it easy or cheap it will save me some aggravation.

If the boots were aftermarket it's very likely they just used a stiffer rubber formulation.
