Anyone install this kit? The installation looks straight forward but the instructions do not mention any modifications to the shift lever or bezel inside the jeep. I'm wondering if there is a upgraded decal or shift pattern indicator available.

Very interesting… curious what the use case for it may be? I could see it possibly being helpful for backing a trailer with a manual trans?

Under product notes it has this

New Shift Pattern: • 2H > 4H > N > 4L > 2L

So I guess you just pull the shifter further up

My Atlas transfer case has 2-low and I use it often. Sometimes the terrain is such that I don’t need 4wd but the low gearing helps with roads strewn with small boulders. Keeps me from riding the clutch

Ok so $350 for the kit.

Add another $500 for a SYE.

That's not Atlas or midnight metalworks money...but I'd rather put that cash towards a D300.

Meanwhile can someone please just spend the money to make the molds for cast D300 cases so I don't have to drool over a billet case?

Here's Teraflex's marketing language... carefully and craftily written...

The TeraFlex TJ: NP231-J 2Low 2WD Low-Range Shift Sector Kit adds a low-range 2WD/RWD (two-wheel-drive/rear-wheel-drive) option to the TJ Wrangler/Unlimited models– NP231-J transfer case–s standard low-range shift pattern. This kit enhances trail turning ability by allowing tighter turns on narrow switchbacks and eliminates most front-end bind encountered while turning with 4WD (four-wheel-drive) engaged. This internal modification does not require any external upgrades.

A lot of oems warn against low range with one axle engaged. Its very easy to excede the axles input torque rating.

Lets say 100 lb/ft. 3.5 first gear and 4.10 axle = 1,435 lb ft. X 2.73 low is 3917 lb ft.
Dana rates the 44 r&p @ 3460 Ft-lbs momentary torque.

You can start to see why 2lo on a boat ramp, pulling on a stump or stuck car gets to be an extremely bad idea. And needs to be very carefully handled offroad. Blip your throttle to 200 lb ft and its only a matter of when, not if you do something stupid.

There is a lot of anecdotal evidence about how someone does it all the time and their dana 28 holds up great. But they aren't engineers . they're just lucky so far.

I had one in my 231 with a TeraLow 4:1 gearset but it was behind 4 angry squirrels so it's not like I had a torque monster.

I had a Detroit in the rear & a Lockrite in the front. Having 2LO past the 4LO position made it super simple to pop it in & out of 4WD. I would run a lot of the trail in 2LO until I needed 4WD and then flip it into 4wd. When I bought the kit it was under $150 but this was around 2005. It was easy to install and I did it at the same time as installing the TeraLow kit. It did come with a sticker that fit under the stock shifter with the new shift pattern.

I have another TJ with an atlas and run it in 2 low all the time with a 44 & detroit. I love the option of having 2 low, so looks like I will do the teraflex low to the 231 and see what happens. Thanks for the input.

So long as you understand the forces involved have at it. Understand you can easily excede the torque your diff is designed for...

The lack of 2-Lo is the one thing I've never understood about the TJ - I *REALLY* wish mine had it - preferably in a twin stick setup, but I'd take what I could get. I've heard some people have to modify the thing (TereFlex 2-lo) to get it to detent reliably. (??) A real granny first would negate most of the need.

I believe the kit comes with decal (bought my t-case with it installed). I had custom shift knob done by sickspeed. Granted I had already done the mod to use this type shift knob.

I wish I had a great answer for you. Sadly my Jeep has seen maybe 1,500 miles in last couple years and maybe 2 weekends of wheeling. I bought the t-case primarily because already had the SS SYE I wanted installed and was from very reputable member here on forum.
