North Carolina List of Carolinian off-roaders

My dad and I want to get out to Uwharrie sometime soon, but haven’t been there before. What are y’all’s recommendations for what we should do?

Neither of us have off-road experience with the exception of forest service trails up in the mountains. I’ve got 31s, no lift, no lockers. My dad has a stock jkur. I’m guessing that his Jeep will go quite a bit farther than mine will as of right now. (Hopefully that’ll change though in the future 😉)

We want something somewhat challenging, but nothing too crazy… definitely not looking to break anything. Thought I’d ask for some advice before going out there blindly

I would stay off of Dickey bell (Tr91) and the front side of Daniel (Tr390). Rocky mount (Tr93) has a little rocky section which has many ways to get through it, not difficult. Other than that most of them are beginner to moderate trails. Have fun

There are several trails neither of you would have problems on. Wolf Den, Falls Dam, Slab Pile and the new Lakeview would be no problem. Most of Rocky Mtn. Loop and Sawmill would be fine. I can't remember if it's technically on Rocky Mtn. Loop or Sawmill, but there's one or two spots that could be challenging, but I think there are areas to go around them. Dutch John has a somewhat steep hill climb but shouldn't be a problem except maybe if it's wet and muddy. I've never went up or down it when it's very wet. Dickey Bell has a big hill climb that could be challenging. I did it on 31's and open diffs, but also had 2.5 inches of lift. Had to stack some rocks in one place to help me through. The back side of Daniel isn't bad and leads to the top where there is a great view. The front side of Daniel is probably a no-go. You can drive the trail up to the ledge to see what it looks like though.

The backside of Daniel is the best trail since it takes you to this spot. This is where I try and stop to have lunch and enjoy the view

Are any of you planning to ride around Uwaharrie anytime soon? Work is a little crazy for me right now, but I'm trying to squeeze in a day in the woods, preferably a weekday to avoid traffic on the trails, but I really just need a day out.

I'm wanting to soon. Probably first part of May. You know me, I'm good for weekdays too for the same reason.

I’m off work the 3rd and 4th of May.

I can probably do one of those days, but I'll have to wait until next week to know for sure, but I'll get back with you on that.

Funny thing, work took me into the Uwharrie area on Monday, and today I being sent back. Maybe I'll take a detour today. How do you guys think my Civic will do? :sneaky:

From what I’ve read on Facebook, it will be just fine on the new Lakeview trail. 🤣

@MountaineerTom and I are planning on riding around Uwharrie Wednesday, May 3rd if anyone else wants to join.

I’m probably going to have to cancel. Found out this morning my step dad passed away. Not sure yet on when serviced and all are going to be, but I imagine it will be around that time.

No problem. I hate to hear of a death. I know it's not easy, but hopefully all involved are ok and doing well. We'll try again some time later on.

Thanks, we knew it was coming soon. He was diagnosed with brain cancer last year.

For those of you wondering about the new trail, Tom and I rode it yesterday. It's an easy one with two rock gardens, one easy, one I'd say is a little extreme. Here's a pic of the trail in general.

Yeah, there wasn't much to that one. Narrow in a couple places with trees. Looked like someone already skinned the trees up. It was fun though, some places looked like it would be REALLY slick in the rain or shortly after.
