Slow fuel filling on 01 TJ

Been getting a check engine code, not sure which one now as I haven't scanned recently, but it's for the evap system in our 2001 TJ Sport. I replaced a solenoid in engine bay, that did nothing. I'm told there is also something under driver door, I haven't crawled under to trace that yet, but she's going on my lift soon and I'd like to knock this out.

I really feel it has something to do with a vent or the filler neck as it is incredibly slow filling. Nozzle constantly click, click, click, click, click, etc, etc....

I was looking through some other threads and it appears on the 05's +/- there is a check valve in there. I don't see the mention on the 01's. What should I look for? Dropping the tank shouldn't be too hard with my lift and jack, but trying to go simpler routes first if possible. Any thoughts? I also saw mention of cleaning charcoal canister, but not sure how that works. I'll see if google has any info on that.

I’ve had quite a few evap leaks over the years and always use a smoke machine to locate the leaks.

My 06 has a problem with filling at Chevron stations but nowhere else.

There are typically two solenoids in the evap system of a vehicle. The vent solenoid, which controls fuel tank venting through the charcoal canister (which captures fuel vapors), and the purge solenoid, which allows the engine to burn the vapors captured in the charcoal canister. The PCM controls both. I'm not familiar with the 2001 TJ system, but I just took a look at the service manual. Here's the system schematic from the manual:

It appears that the venting is handled by the leak detection pump, and both that and the purge solenoid are located near each other in the engine bay near the drivers side fender:

It may be the purge solenoid that you changed previously. The one that would make it difficult to fill the tank is the solenoid incorporated in the leak detection pump. The purge valve causes different issues. For example, if it sticks open, it will cause erratic running immediately after you fuel up because the engine will be drawing in extra fuel from the charcoal canister that is unaccounted for by the PCM. At startup, when the PCM is running open loop, it has no way to correct for the extra fuel. It can only do that in closed loop mode, when the O2 sensors will detect it.

I don't believe the problem with the check valve in the tank goes back to 2001, so I don't think that's causing your fill issue. Without the error code, and with only the information provided, I'd suspect that your leak detection pump has failed. Of course getting that error code could help nail down a diagnosis.

Try cleaning the gas cap sealing points and the filler tube lip. Mine is a 2006, one evap code was the dirt, and last one (embarrassing) I forgot to tighten the cap. Hopefully that's your issue and it will save you time and money.

The go to solution for the slow fill at the pump has been the Genuine GM Fuel Tank Filler Hose 15131046.
I checked the link on Amazon to it on wranglertjforum and it was out of stock. I ended up snagging one on Ebay a couple of days ago.

I think I replaced the gas cap, but that wouldn't stop it from filing. I've had them be loose as well....I think everyone has.

Here's the codes I pulled last time I messed with. Not sure if i got any of them cleared. I'll recheck when I can get back to it. My busy teen drives it.

P0455, seems to say dirty fuel cap out purge valve. I'll recheck cap and see if I can test purge valve. Neither should affect fueling though.

P1486, seems to say kinked hose. That's leading me to think drop tank?

The last again say purge valve or hose it seems.

If I'm not correct isn't that on like 04, 05, 06? I don't think it goes back to 01. If I'm wrong, someone please. Correct me.

Just so you are aware, turn the key on 3 times, don’t start it and leave the key in the on position that last time and the codes will show on the odometer. Don’t have to have a reader

Wait, wait, WHAT!!! I had to go check and you are correct. How did I not know this? Does it work with all makes/ models?

I get.....
P0158
P0442
P0455
P0456
Done

I think it works on all year TJs, but not positive. I know it works on my 01.

Crawled under to do oil change and not sure how or why I missed this before, but this 02 sensor is damaged and the entire pipe is cobbled together with crap welds. Should I run with it or replace that pipe?

Might explain the p0158 code. But I thought that was bank 2 sensor 2, meaning passenger side after cat. Hmmm....

Still doesn't explain fuel issue.
