Buying Advice: 2003 TJ Sport

@Mikee024 is this not a 44?

Sounds like you got a great deal! Was the Rubicon local to you?

Looks like a Dana 44 in the photo.

My comment was referring to the red wrangler x ad that @CreepinDeth posted.

Here’s a useful chart:

I should also note that I checked Craigslist, Auto Trader, and Cars.com daily. I wasn't checking cars.com, until I missed a creampuff 50k mile Rubicon priced at $19,500 that was listed there and nowhere else. Evidently it had been listed by a dealer in Kiowa for a month, and when I reached out on a Saturday evening it had sold that same day.

I looked for my LJ for a very long time, in Denver, and never could get there fast enough. This was two years ago, the market was high priced and extremely fast. I finally found a very clean, stock one in Durango (Craigslist). That was far enough away from Denver Metro (300 miles) to discourage most buyers, which made it available for me. Look for one close by, but keep an eye on the distant ones too.

Don’t be afraid to keep posting Jeeps and asking, we seem to enjoy it. It may take some time to find the right one but at least it doesn’t sound like you need to get one to daily drive.

I feel very welcome by the community already. You guys are awesome.

This would be a toy/weekend car to get up into the Rockies. The wife insists upon automatic so she can take it lightly off-road (she can drive manual, but prefers auto).

I’m curious as to how many on here have the tj as their daily/only car. I’m guessing it’s more of a project/second vehicle for many.

My LJ is currently a daily driver. I don't want it to be, but it's getting a workout with both of my girls home from college.

I think the market has softened since I bought mine. It was about the same as the one you mentioned but with just north of 70K mi. Keep looking, enjoy the frustrating search!

I daily mine as well, but I don't drive that much right now. We'll see what the future holds.

I sold my wife’s 2019 Hyundai Sonata with 60k and an engine that lost a qt of oil somewhere every 1500 miles to AutoNation in Oct. They gave me a great price for it I prefer buying from a PP over a dealer. Cast your search farther and you will have more options. It took me 6months to find my 06 LJ Rubicon. My wife and I searched the Web several times a day and looked at a lot of crap. The more you look at the easier it will be to know when you found the right one for you.

Good advice
I search nationwide and I will fly to grab a vehicle or drive. Drove to Ohio to get a Lexus for my wife, but didnt work out. Sheisty dealer hid things

I went on vacation with the family to Daytona Beach for a week, and already had plans to go pickup my TJ. Got lucky

It was 1 hour South of Orlando. So we hit Seaworld, and after went and grabbed it and drove 2.5 hrs back to Daytona, and then 17 hrs back home.

Huge risk obviously, but Im very mechanically and electrically inclined. Still….i got lucky. Idle sensor spit a code in Tennessee as I was parkin for the night. Checked it, and rode home without issue

It clears and then comes back and idles a wee rough for 60 seconds and clears. Still need to look into it

This may be my old age talking... There is no way I would spend 15K for a twenty year old vehicle. I picked up a 06 with 4.0, auto, hard top, soft top and new tires for half of that. I did have to do some front end work and a heater core.

My Jeeps are toys and spend 99% of the time locked in the garage. Makes financial sense given my 20k+ miles driven annually to daily drive a fuel efficient commuter car. Plus no wear and tear on my trail rigs from daily driving.

I found my TJ in Co 800+ miles from home. I was able to get the seller to hold it for me until the week end. The wife and I flew into Denver Friday rented a car and drove 2.5 hours to see it. We got a hotel and made the deal the next morning. We drove back to Denver in a blizzard freaking out my wife the whole way back. Before we flew back Sunday the wife went and did her shopping in Denver witch made her happy. My Son and I drove up the next week with a trailer and brought it back home. Luckily there was a branch of my bank less than a mile from the seller and getting a cashers check was easy. Do not be afraid to travel just make it part of the adventure.

I'm 1/2 on out of state adventures. I bought a Trans Am about 7 hours away. Great trip and very fun driving back. I bought my Duramax about 10 hours away, it made it half way before it had "emissions" issues and had to be towed 4-5 hours ($1200 later).

I don't really regret either one.
