I'm trying to organise some parts for my bomber with out having to pull it apart prior.

The local parts supplier is listing a few different thermostats for my 2003 4L.

Does anyone know the correct type?

-54mm flange
or
-46mm flange (offset type)

Cheers

Thanks guys, going to need to try cross reference some pictures.

I'm guessing the difference is there will be two different style thermostat housings to suit AC and non AC TJs

There is no difference in thermostats for a/c vs. non-a/c equipped TJs. This is a very common part, I'm surprised you're having trouble finding a suitable thermostat.

Here's a list from Rock Auto... Stant is a good brand to go after.

Whatever you pick, make sure it has the correct 195 degree rating. Don't be tempted into going with a lower temperature model like a 165 or 180 degree model which will just screw things up.

And make darned sure to avoid any thermostat labeled as a "fail-safe". Fail-safe thermostats are great in concept but they don't work as envisioned... they like to fail prematurely/too easily in the open position which means your engine won't warm up quickly enough or properly.

Unfortunately getting a thermostat out of the US isn't a good option.

This is what is listed here: http://www.tridon.com.au/PartFinder/Jeep/Wrangler/2003

I guess I'll have to pull mine apart to be sure.

I found that Stant thermostats have a Motorad label on them and the Mopar Version now shipped also has MotoRad on them. Even NAPA is selling motorad. Using Jerrys link I got a Stant Superstat (MADE IN USA) box but the thermostat inside is stamped Motorad, I can't find one stamped Stant. Also they are not stamped made in the USA on the thermostat anymore either :/.
It does have the jiggle valve too, time to drill the 1/8 hole.

Also for what it's worth I put a failsafe 195F in before due to not doing any research and it failed within 5 months as it is over
cooling my Inline 6 to 176 F at idle causing a fuel injector temperature out of range CEL error(which is defined as coolant being under 181 F for more than 3 minutes and less than 59 minutes). Im sure that one is a Motorad Failsafe.

I think since the Motorad started replacing the Stant some people are going with the Robert Shaw. If I ordered a Stant and received a Motorad I would let them have it back on their return shipping dime.

Gotta love it when a company buys out a competitor and instead of continuing the brand, just keeps the lable and sticks their garbage in it...

Guys, Motored is an international company HQed in Israel, and also manufactures there. It is not kind of cheap outsourcing something made in cheapest noname factory. They are supplier for bunch of automative manufactures, like BMW and stuff, and also supplier of Mopar.
This is what I got running in my rig, the bag and what comes inside:

I replaced the thermostat and water pump in my sons rig with a Stant about 2 years ago. The system kept having issues. After about a year of random overheating we flushed and put thermocure through the system. Finally replaced the Stant with a Flowkooler and we’ve been good to go ever since. Very nice part. Easier to install because it stays in place, unlike the two Stants I’ve installed that require you to hold it in place while quickly pushing the housing over it and hoping it’s right.
