Hi all my name is kaylah I own a 2001 tj wrangler renegade. I changed my front and rear diffs to 3.73 gears. Original is 3.07 gears wondering will this effect my gearbox or can I tune gearbox to suit gear change

Which transmission does your TJ have?
What is your tire size?

If you are talking about the speedometer you can change the gear in the transfer case to fix the reading.

You shouldn't have to do anything....the only difference is you will run a little higher rpm's with the gear change...makes it better for bigger tires later on😀

You have a Renegade, and this is a TJ forum, but with gears it doesn’t matter what your rig is. The change in gears from 3.07 to 3.73 won’t affect your gearbox. There’s nothing to tune. Carry on.

Ok before everyone starts throwing comments around, tell us exactly what you’re trying to achieve. Your post is too vague. What are you trying to achieve when you ask about “tuning the gearbox to suit gear change?”

Australia has special edition TJs too. ;)

With a 30" tire driving at 70 mph with 3.07 gears the engine would be spinning around 2400 rpms, but with 3.73 gears driving at the same speed with the same tire size the engine would be spinning around 2900 rpms; this is without figuring the speedometer gear ratio into the calculations.
You need to calculate the tire size to differential gear ratio using the chart below to adjust your speedometer readings (calibration).

I am wondering why my vehicle now surges between gears and why while driving if I put my foot down it surges. Maybe has nothing at all to do with the gear ratio change maybe has to do with the engine

Any idea why is would surge between gear change or when putting my foot down while driving

@TheBoogieman is right, you have the 3-speed auto if you have a 2001. Like he said, you might be feeling a better throttle response to the gear change. It adds a little power back after switching to larger tires. It’s going to feel a lot more touchy. If it’s surging in between shifts (like it’s not shifting immediately) that sounds like a transmission problem.
