I’m regearing a HP30 from a 99 XJ that I’m going to swap into my TJ. Backlash is only 0.006, so I still need to adjust that a little, but I think I’m getting close on pinion depth.

Shims behind inner pinion race: 0.030
RGS: 0.053
NRGS: 0.042

This is my first time setting up gears, so I wanted to see what some of y’all with more experience think. Thanks in advance.

You are a tiny bit deep. Try pulling .003 shim and lets see how it looks.

That is better for sure. I would add a thou back in if you have the shims to do it.

@Blackjack

Ok I’m back at it today. I added .001 back in, so I went from 0.027 to 0.028 behind the inner pinion bearing race. Backlash is at 0.009 so I’ll try to tighten that up still, but how does this look? Thanks.

There are four pics there. First two look like it is a thou shallow and the second two are too deep. And do not worry about backlash. If you are under .010 you are fine no need to get nit picky. Pattern is most important and just make sure the backlash is in range.

All 4 of those pics are from the same pattern. I just took 2 of each side.

I might just go back to my setup in post #4 if you think that will ride?

27 isn't a normal pinion depth range for a HP30. Normally its around 54-57. Do you have a shim/slinger under the pinion head too? I don't like your drive side pattern and that's what you'll be using on a HP30. I'm curious to the brand of gears (for my own thoughts). I would ignore the coast side for now and try to bracket the drive side. It looks deep, but that can be deceiving since the coast looked decent. Use very little paint and take it deeper to see what the pattern does. Then take it shallower than what you have to see what it does. I'm seeing a lot of gears lately with one side decent and the other not so good.

I also have a mitutoyo caliper that goes out to .00001, so I’m not quite sure what to do with a shim that measures 0.01924 for example. Is that 0.019, or do I need to keep track of the 0.00024 for when I stack them?

I would just round up or down. Make sure to clean out the bearing seats as well as the races to make sure you don't have anything in there that can throw things off. If that's good, try dropping 2-3 thou.

Coast looks a touch deep but drive is close. Try cleaning everything up getting rid of all the old marking compound and opening the backlash a touch and see what that looks like.

So I think your picture is pretty distorted! The coast side looks decent but there drive side looks deep. Weird pattern for sure. You want to get the drive side correct.

Mike is right you are a touch deep on the drive side. Maybe try pulling .002 if you can.
