Car pics too cool not to share

Saw this today at my mechanic at the end of my block, he works on all the oldies...1970 AMC Javelin, seemed in great shape. The hood was getting some touch ups. Said SST on the rear quarter panel?

Yup. "SST" was definitely an AMC package. The '70 Javelin and AMX are considered the ones to have amongst the AMC crowd. Looking at that one, it's easy to see why. ;)

This is my father standing outside his 1953 1 ton Dodge. @Squatch et al, what would have been the engine and (4-speed) transmission in this truck? I've only been able to find info on 1/2 tons online...

I actually had to do a little research on this one, @Zorba. I knew it would be a flathead 6, and assumed it would be of the 218 cu. in. variety. However, it appears that there was also a 230 cu. in. version (I didn't know that), and with your dad's truck being a 1-ton, it is very likely that his was so equipped. Not a lot of (easy to find) information on the 1-ton and up versions of the older Dodge trucks. If I do locate something more definitive, I'll be sure and let you know.

*Apparently, the '53 1-ton is referred to as a B-3-D, or a B-4-D. I don't know what the difference is in the designation. It's not the tonnage, so maybe it's the wheelbase? These things are rather tough to find any solid information on! :(

Yea, I know. Its REALLY hard to find any info whatsoever. Like the GMC that replaced it, it had a 9 foot bed from what my dad told me. He bought it used in San Jose to replace a 48 (??) GMC carryall that had towed their house trailer all the way across the country. 3 on the tree, and whatever straight 6 those had. It was apparently a 1/2 ton. Dad said it would shudder and shake when getting the trailer moving, but it never gave up. He left Buffalo NY for San Jose with this combo. Somewhere along the way, the carryall's brakes gave out. Since the change in braking performance was apparently minimal, dad just used the trailer brakes all the way. He said that he had to give 3 day's advance notice that he wanted to stop...

I imagine that the carryall came with brakes at every tire/wheel location, even if it wasn't a law at the time. I also believe that his brakes went out because that wasn't an unusual occurrence back then. I will say that your dad must have had the top of the line in trailers to have one with brakes. Other than semis I don't think I ever saw a trailer with brakes until some time in the late 90s.

Are we talking "house trailers" or cargo trailers? Every house trailer I've ever seen had brakes - the one in question was 29 feet long - and single axle (!!). Even a 16 foot Aristocrat from the late 60s had brakes. The old GMC had a dropping resistor in it as the brakes on that trailer - and its 33 foot successor - were 6 volts, not 12 so trailer brakes have been around for awhile. I'm guessing the Dodge was a 6 volt system. When we bought a 29 foot fifth-wheel in 1976, we had to bypass the GMC's dropping resistor.

Brings back many great memories. My grandfather and uncle both drove the old deuce and a quarter about 40 or 50 years ago. Those things are massive.

Just a few weeks ago I was going through old pictures for a memorial service for my mother. There were many, many pictures of those cars. Crazy timing.

The 48 GMC should have a 228 " overhead valve I-6 , the 3 spd would have about a 3 to 1 first gear and a 4.10 rear end in the 1/2 ton.

Count me as a Land Yacht lover!

While this not mine, it's the exact same thing I drove for years, right down to the color. It's a '76 Oldsmobile 98 Regency. The car was a mile long, and could comfortably carry 6 people from one gas pump to the next. Mine was every bit as clean as this one, too. Loved that car!

Do 2 doors count?

My first car looked like this one. 79 Mercury Cougar 351 Windsor glass packed dual exhaust.

This reminds me of some old folks that lived where I grew up. They had a new 76 Fleetwood with a 425 . The engine was like a International , all you could hear was the fan , as the engine gave lack luster effort to rev to 3800 rpm .
But the car was quiet , road smooth and looked like a Cadillac.
